Look around for plug like the kind on the end of your kitchen kettle and follow it to the block heater if you have one.

Are you talking about the glow plugs on your old tractor (quick warming devices in your engine that heat things up a bit to make starting easier in cold weather)? Something may be broke on your tractor if you don't have working glow plugs.

Or are you looking for a plug in preheater that slowly warms up stuff and keeps it warm? If you tractor does not have one, you can have one installed.

On some of the tractors, you have to push in on the key and hold it in to power the engine air heater or glow plugs.

Tell us a bit about the history of the tractor. Location?

Deere dealer should be able to give you more specifics about what the tractor has for engine "heat".

Have you looked at jdparts for info? Shows this coolant heater on the 3040.

JDparts.com lists a fuel pre-heater for a 3040 part # DD14698 GLOW PLUG and they also show thermostart part # AR63105 BURNER.

In my bush flying days I had a simple way the keep the engine compartment warm that I use to this day even on my tractors. I throw an insulating blanket over the hood and front and place one of those light fixtures with the safety cages with a 100 watt bulb in it in the engine compartment.. The heat from the bulb keeps everything warm enough for easy starting.

I was gonna suggest a blanket/tarp over it with an electric heater underneath. Nice to know a light bulb works well. Good use for those soon-to-be-extinct bulbs.

Does your JD suffer from the same lack of a glow plug light as our 4000 series and wee 2000 series.

On my 4010, I have to turn the ignition switch to "start" with the range lever in "L" or "H". Hold for about 6 seconds and switch range lever to "N".
