I wanted to buy some gear oil (80w-90) from Walmart in the one gallon containers for over three weeks now. There are three stores in my driving range and not one of them has received any new inventory in this gear oil. I stop in every couple of days. They know me at one store and keep telling me it's on order. They have plenty of the 90-140 but just can't get the 80w-90. Store people don't know why they are getting it.

I'd just use the 90w140.

I needed a gallon of gear oil a while back and found what I needed,at of all places, advanced auto parts, went in to buy a bottle jack and got a pleasant surprise, saved me a little running around that morning

I did check Autozone and it was $2.00 more then Walmart. Wasn't in a rush for the oil but will need over several gallons for several tractors, so thought I'd just keep checking the 3 Walmart stores that are on my way to work. Is it OK to use the 90-140 oil instead?

thanks,
Ralph

My job is a lube salesman and there's no shortage of oil on this end. I wouldn't use a 80W/140 in place of a 80W/90 gear oil. That's a rather drastic change in viscosity.

Ditto what DP said.. check your manual for specs for the lube.. use what it says, or equivalent. While I might change to a 75-90S vs a plain 80w90.. going to a 85/140 may not be correct for your application.. etc.

I agree. Prices are good, but the availability of some products is not the best.

JMHO.

Will I stopped at one of the Walmart stores today and they got in three 1 gallon containers. I first, it looked like they had got in more of the other (80-140?) but they had put it up against it and I had to take a second look to notice the markings. I just don't understand why it would take over three weeks to get this if there's a demand for it. All three stores had been out for weeks.

thanks,
Ralph
