Is the ROPS really needed?

Ok, lets go at this from a different angle. How many times has your rops tried to kill or maim you... 3 for me. Once on the garage door, once with a tree limb, and finally a goose egg on my noggin when I stood up into it after hooking up the pto..

Another story; A neighbor of mine with a new JD Zero turn drove under a low overhang and the ROPS caught it, pulling the front wheels up under the structure and trapped him. Not only that the control bars got jammed forward and the machine continued to power forward. He was fortunately able to reach the key and kill it.

Our resident ROPs fearmonger, will have no respect for real facts like that, supporting a counter opinion ;)

I know how you got that "goose egg" on your noggin.. You did not have your ROPS up like you should have each and every time your tractor leaves the storage area. :D

Don't get all excited DarkBlack
The first part he said how many had the Rops try to kill them, 3 times for him. It sounds like he meant it jokingly :D
The second part sounds like the guy was OK and lived. You might bang into the door or hit a branch or bump your head.
But how many actual deaths did a rops cause verses Saved? Do you have those numbers DB ?

WOW!! Never thought of that, probably because I don't have any such overhang that could do that. But something to keep in mind.

Having extricated at least three crushed or decapitated victims of tractor rollover accidents (after 45 years on a FD rescue team memory gets foggy), I truly believe in ROPS and seat belts. Of the three I recall, none would have been fatal if the seat belt had been used. Totally intact tractor occupant areas and bodies crushed under tractor or in one case decapitated by the roll bar. In the latter case the tractor was upside down so without a ROPS the driver would most likely have been killed but had he had a seat belt on he would have simply been hanging upside down as the roll bar totally supported and protected the occupant area.

If the tractor is equipped with a seat belt and a ROPS use it and if not equipped with a ROPS no seat belt.
