The 790 seems like a great tractor, but is it becoming outdated in comparison to the competition and other Deere Compacts? I'm not trying to start a "Deere" arguement, just wondering what you folks thought.

No doubt, it's an old design...stemming from the '80's.
However, it's simple and no frills..which is what I want in a tractor. All the gadgets..cruise control..sorry, I've no need or desire for that.

And, considering the power, that 790 series is a heck of a machine and a great deal.

But..it is an old design...but has a lot of years left in it, if Deere continues to sell it. Reliable...easy to work on...parts are readily available. I suggest in 30 years, 790 (and 990) parts will be around (I won't though!). Do you think all the electronic gear on Deere's (and the other brands) will still be around?

So, why do you even bring this topic up?

If you're considering a 790..well, you said yrself it's an old design. As an owner, I'm recommending it as a stout tractor for a 3 to 10 acre residence..or as a second tractor for a small to medium sized farm.

Nothing wrong with the KISS principle at all. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I saw one near the door when I went to the dealership last. So, I asked the salesperson about it. He said it was a simple tractor that came out before the 4310, similar hp & look, and is still being built.

Simple is good, I have to agree with that. I was just curious as to what the folks on this forum thought. There seems to be plenty of them around this area and the local dealer always has one on the lot. It just seemed like an 'older' platform in comparison to the others I've looked at, but as you pointed out, that isn't always a bad thing.

To sum it up in one word - Bulletproof... Yes its older (80's) technology, but it works, and works very, very well..

If you can live with the gear transmission, I dont think it can be beat for a 27HP compact...

My 990 is very similar and I love it. I have no need for all those electronic gadgets either /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

A well-placed rumor has it that a 790 variant will be folded into the 3000 series line, with a number like 3203. It will be a 790 but with hydro and NO mid-mount mower option. Figure 30 hp, hydro and a loader for about the price of a 2210 (~$12K). Could be interesting! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I looked very closely at the 790 and 990 before I bought the 4110. Both very impressive simple no frills machines. Very solid and looked easy to work on. One of the two would be sitting here now if it was available in hydro for the price I got the 4110 at. The slopes I have to deal with and my wife needing to be able to be comfortable running one steered me away. I have a close friend that has the 770 (older 790) and it has been a no problem tractor for him. I would think these two models will stay as is for awhile yet. My dealer seems to sell them each year.

Could be...but it doesn't make a lot of sense. The current 790 already has a mid-PTO option ($400 dealer installed),. Why build this tractor with a hydro, but not a mid-PTO?

However, this tractor isn't a big profit maker for the dealers...I've been told that by my dealer. It would also be in direct competition with the 2520 and 3120 machines.

If Deere does make a variant for the 3xxx series, I do hope they keep it that robust simple little tractor it is.

However, we shall see...
