Is it a pain to raise trailer GVW?

I want to raise my trailer registration from 10,000 to 12,000. I live in NY. Anyone do this? how much of a pain is this to do. My trailer is well capable of 6 ton. Weighs 3800 lbs dry, and with my bigger tractor I'm about 10, 600 and don't want a fine in this most generous state.....

How do you propose on doing it? Does have a home made registration?

If it is a factory buillt, purchased trailer it can only be registered to max rating they put on the build sheet that was used to generate the title.

you would have to register it as a homemade trailer. you will need to prove the tires and axles are up the the task of upping the weight. Then you will need to tow trailer to nearest certified scales and get a printed sheet of weight. Then and only then you can go into dmv and jump through the hoops with paperwork and register it with a new VIN .

Depends totally on whether it is registered for the titled weight or not. if it is, then all the above is true. If not, it can be re-registered for the titled GVW without much hassle.

You can have a 10k gvw trailer and register it for anything under that.

Around here many people that have a trailer with a 20k rating for example will register it as 10k rating so they don't need a yearly safety inspection. They must keep in mind that they can't legally tow the big weight. That can be changed pretty easily.

I know a guy that had a 7k or 10k trailer registered for 4k, the registration is cheaper. He is afraid to haul anything heavy on it. In Virginia anything over 3k must have brakes and be inspected yearly. I hate yearly inspections, they are a waste of time.

once you register over 10000 and if your combination weight is over 26000 you will need class A CDL, also your truck will need dot #'s on it at all times when towing a 10000 GVW magnets are not allowed.

Around here the easiest way is to lose the Title and have a new one issued as a home built trailer.

You may not be overweight though. Take it to a scale with your heaviest item on it and weigh it out. All that matters is what is on the axles for both the trailer and the truck, that you dont exceed your trucks GCVWR, and its GVWR.

Being only 600# over by your guesstimate, you may not be when you consider the weight on the truck via the hitch. A 10,000# load should have 10% of that on the ball so about 1,000# of tongue weight which will now be on the truck.
