Is a JD 400 a good parts machine for a JD 420???

i've got a chance to pick up a John Deere 400 garden tractor that has a blown engine.

I've got a JD 420 that I'm trying to keep running. I'm wondering how many of the parts are interchangeable??

Basically would it be a good parts machine.

I'm not absolutely sure,but being the 400 was the predecessor to the 420,I would think there would be alot of the same parts on both machines.

Probably the best place to check is JD Parts. Look at both models and compare like parts, ie: hydraulic valve bodies, mower lifts, etc. I was always under the impression that the 400 was more or less a stand alone model, only attachments made for it would fit.

I'd do some pretty careful checking!

400 used a Kohler engine, 420 used Onan. 400's were "attachment specific", meaning most attachments do not interchange. Don't think (not sure) the 400 had a two-speed trans-axle or differential lock. ~~ grnspot110

Correct on the Kohler to Onan engine difference. The 400 did have a two speed axle but did not have diff lock.
