properly trained it will work fine. i actually sat down with the owner of invisivble fence for north. va and he told me that thay can contain anything. PM me and i will get you his number, he can atleast get you together with the local guys by you. personally i am for just training my dogs, and taking them outside as much as possible. this way they dont have a "need" to run off and if they do, they listen to me. i havent had any trouble with them in 7 years. plus i just cant afford one of these fences.

One problem to be aware of with these fences is that if the dog does "bite the bullet" and get past the wire, they are not likely to "bite the bullet" to come back in again. I've known two dogs who have run past the wire in the heat of chasing a deer only to be "stuck" on the other side.

Any reason you're looking for a Husky? We have a German Shephard / Husky cross...and the Husky in her keeps getting her in trouble. They are born to run and love it. Don't think we'd go that route again. Other than we saved her from the pound and she gets lots of love and affection...she just doesn't think 10 acres is enough for her /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

We have about 3 acres enclosed with an invisible fence. We got it (and a spare) from a farm store closing down. It has been extremely reliable. If trained proberly, the dogs have a lot of respect for it. One of our dogs (a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix) really likes to run, but has not run through the fence yet -- though we do have the gain turned up to the maximum, giving about a 30' zone where the collar activates.
BTW, you don't have to buy the "special" fence wire for it. I just bought the cheapest 16-18 gauge wire and lay it on top of the ground through the woods and buried it under the driveway.
Only problem is that my son has just cut the wire where it is under the driveway when he was snowplowing -- now I have to shovel snow on the edges to find the break.

i have had mixwd experience with the original invisible fence, the key is to make sure that the dog never gets the chance to run through the fence, once they learn that they can get through the fence forget it. i have had three dogs with the fence, the first two did well, one of the dogs died and i got a lab, that bozo would run right through, never think about it, then he taught the other dog to run through. so now the fence is shut off. i even put two collars on the lab, he still ran through the fence, one day i came home and he was sitting in the shock zone, with the collar beeping and his neck twitching from the shock and wagging his tail as he was glad to see me, go figure!!!!

We purchased a wireless fence system last year for our golden/shepherd mix and it has eben great. There are some limitations on the wireless system in that it broadcasts a circular "safe area" that the dog can stay in. If she leave the area, the collar beeps, then shocks her for up to 45 seconds. She tried running outside of it a few times, but then came yelping back and hasn't left since. The maximum circle is 90 feet, but if you need more you can put on another transmitter and make it figure-eight shaped.
For our yard area, it worked out fine. The reason we wwent for the wireless is so we can take her camping with us, bringing the unit and making a circle in the campsite for her to stay in. Keeps her from having to be chained up the whole time.

I have two dogs and thought about the invisible fence, but as someone pointed out to me, it won't keep another dog from getting into your yard and getting a hold of your dog. That's my opinion /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

My problem isn't keeping other dogs out of the yard, but keeping the deer out of the yard. They are driving the dogs crazy when the dogs are inside and the deer come into the back yard. Any suggestions to keeping them away???

have had 4 dogs on the original invisable fence in the past. 3 jack russels and 1 husky.
2 of the jr's learned fast not to get to close. The husky had such thick fur I don't think it really hurt. Even though he chirped a bit he would come and go as he pleased. No amount of training seemded to matter. One of the JRs was the same.
The female JR we had leaared to sit by the fence and let it beep till it went quite and then mozy on out. I leared to vary the signal strengthe now and then to her frustration and turned off the beep on the coller. SHe Eventually got the piont...
They work well if the dog hates pain or is fearfull of pain it can't see coming.
Good luck.... We still have one of the JR's and have not put the fence uo yet as he is 8 and stays close to home now a days.
Had to give the Hsuky up he kept geting after the neighbors horses. By the way they don't seem to have the best sence of whatr direction is home either....

That explains it. except mine would stay gone till I went found him. Probable figured why walk home when pop will come pick me up if I just keep wondering around. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif He was also only about yr old when I gave him to a family whith a high fence He kept jumpung the 4' one I had at the time and a female husky to pal around with....

We used a product called a wireless deer fence last summer. It seemed to help. It's not perfect and I think it takes a while to "train" the deer, but it seemed that we saved some of our flowers after installing some of these units. Here is the website: Wireless Deer Fence

I beleive the U of Alabama or Auburn has done a study on repelling deer some one mentioned it in previous post about the subject.
