I think the external has a capacity advantage and easier to work on obviously but would a tractor having internal hydraulic lift cylinders dissuade anyone from buying a tractor?

Yes. I noticed that Kioti and Kubota tend to have external cylinders.

I own 2 tractors with internal 3 pt cylinders & 1 with external cylinders. I've owned my '91 JD 4255(120 HP) with internal single cylinder with 6175# lift capacity that's never required any repair. My '11 Kubota M7040(70 HP) has dual external cylinders with 4200#s lift. My '80 Ford 6700(75 HP) with single internal cylinder has 4040#s lift Neither type has given any problems. Lift capacity is determined by several factors such as system hyd pressure,diameter of cylinder or cylinders & design of linkage.

Neither would bother me.
On bigger tractors....quite a few of them seem to go external now. Smaller tractors seem to still be internal. They both work fine

If anything, the external ones are much easier to pull off and repair. On the other hand, they are a bit exposed to the elements but not that big of a deal.
I think one of the reasons for the external cylinders is that gives the manufacturers a lot more room under the seat, specially with cabbed tractors. They can use a smaller valve mounted on the side with the position feedback linkage easily attached to it and to the rocker arm, instead of the bigger rockshaft and cylinder assembly.
