02 JD 4600. Cranks full speed, won't start. Called for service call, went out it fired right up, cancelled service call before he left. Last night, -8F when I got home, fired right up. This morning 20F, cranked beautifully, wouldn't fire.:confused2: Ideas, cheap solutions appreciated.

I had a 2001 JD 4500 a few years back and had a similar problem. I would change fuel filter and I also had to replace the injector pump. I think you can manually operate the pump and it should start up.

I have replaced the fuel filter and it does have Howes treated diesel fuel in it. It started at -8F, but not at +20F. I'm a thinking it might be a bad fuel shut off solinoid. I hope not. $165 for a new one. I'm not hearing the solinoid activate when I turn the key, so I suspect it might be that, not the fuel pump. Anything besides the solinoid I should take a gander at??

Are you familiar with the Thermistor problem common to those tractors? It controls the fuel solenoid. Lots of info here with a search for "Thermistor". Many here including me will be glad to provide more detail, but do the search first.

I just ordered a new thermistor today. Will have it tomorrow. I'm fairly certain that it is the thermistor. Once I have that fixed it should be a great piece of equipment. I love it when it runs Putting chains on her too so she should move snow very very well. Thanks for the heads up on the thermistor.

Agree it does sound like the thermistor but looks like you are on top of it. Let us know how it comes out.

I will. I was looking for a 955 last year when this 4600 was traded in while I was talking to the dealer. I think I got a better tractor than the 955. Cab, FEL, and 72" mower. I really love it. Once this thermistor glitch is fixed I believe she will be really dependable.
