just looking
Hi all,

I’m looking to install insulated roof panels for my patio to improve comfort and energy efficiency.

My goal is to keep the space cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter while reducing noise from rain.

I’m considering options like foam core or composite panels, but I’m unsure which would be best for durability and insulation.

Does anyone have experience with different types of insulated roof panels?

What are the pros and cons? Any tips on installation or specific products to look into would be greatly appreciated.

Any photos of the space?

Are you thinking a standalone roof? Attached to the home?

Here is a nearby example ; 25' high, roof slopes matching the house to cover a patio and outdoor BBQ area. The roof is 2x6 tongue and groove plus insulation;

Note the wrap around screen and wind protection.

No idea the cost.

All the best,

Does your patio have walls? I'm not sure what the insulation is going to do if there isn't a way to keep the outside air from getting in there?

On my patio, I put OSB down, then 30 pound tar paper, and they metal R panels on top of that. The OSB under the metal stops almost all of the noise from the rain

I think it would help more than a little to insulate the roof. I don't yet have my shop wired so there is no insulation or interior finishing with a duroid roof and plywood roof sheathing. While working in there during the hot weather I checked temperatures with an inexpensive laser thermometer and got readings of 55 degrees Celsius or 131 degrees F on the underside of the roof. It felt much cooler outside. This is in a 30x44 building with 15' ceiling and 14x16 door wide open. Yes there were walls to contain the heat but you could feel it by late morning.

I had insulated panels installed on my patio and carport cover about 15 years ago. These are 4" thick foam panels sandwiched between aluminum sheets. They are sturdy enough to jump up and down on them without any flexing and they have been through several hurricanes with no damage at all. If the sun is beating down on them on a 100 degree day, the bottom of these panels is cool as a cucumber. I am very satisfied with these panels and am glad I did not get cheaper R-panels that you can not even walk on without denting them.

Thanks! What does the top side consist of for your carport? I.e. are these the roof, or is there a truss and beam above them and under a roof?

All the best,

Peter

The top is just the flat side of the aluminum covered foam panel. All the support is underneath as shown in the photo. I repeat, these panels are very strong and can easily support 2 or 3 people walking on them. These panels are 4' wide and 18' long
