Hi! Am looking for a loader for my 2005 John Deere 790 tractor and has on anyone ever seen a 420 Loader on a 790 or tried to mount one on? I found a 420 loader reasonable unlike other loaders I've found made for a 790. I know the very similar model 419 loader was made to go on the 790 and I don't think there is much difference at all between the 419 and 420. But am not sure if it just had different brackets or there were physical differences as to me they look exactly the same. The 420 loader we are looking at came off a 4200. And I know the JD brackets for both the 790 and 4200 are different because for these 3 loaders: the 300, 300 X and 300 CX John Deere had different brackets for both tractor models. The man who has the 420 loader thinks you could re-drill the 4 holes in each of the two 420 mounting plates and mount it but he wasn't sure. I imagine the loader balance would be thrown off a little if it can be done.

And will the 790 loader brackets that go on the 419 fit the 420 without any or much modification? Even if so they only made the 419 a year or two so spare 419 loader brackets we think will be impossible to find. My 2005 JD 790 has right side loader ready hydraulics like the 420 loader is set up for. If anyone has good knowledge of putting a 420 loader on a 790 or pictures even please let me know -thanks!

I didn't see 790 tractor mentioned in PC2664. IMHO with the aid of a welding machine & acetylene cutting torch any loader of correct size could be mounted on a comparable size tractor.

I fabricated a loader , bucket , and forks, for our 4110. Also backhoe mounts for a Bradco 611 to a TC55DA NH. Its more fun than any aspect of ownership. One can cure anything with a metal saw, and mig welder.

according to JD parts catalog the 410-460 loaders have a a ton of interchangeable parts but have a bunch of different mounting brackets to accommodate various tractors. I am not certain but I am guessing if you put a 420 and 419 side by side you could probably not even see any noticeable difference. Much like how the 420 and 430 are. Only difference is hydraulic lift.

The big thing is going to be to get the rear mount bracket to line up properly. The 420 bracket will probably as you said need to be fabricated a little bit or if possible a 419 bracket will probably work.

Looking at photos online of a 790 with a 419 loader the loader looks very similar to my 420 loader. It looks like the loader itself sits on the mounts the same as my 420 but the mounts on the 790 are elevated. The mounts on the 790/419 look like they go up and back a bit. The square tube mounts on my 4310 come straight out from the chassis.

JD groups the 410, 419, 420, 430 and 460 Loaders together in the parts manual. As stated above they don't show mounts for a 790 but I have clearly found photos of 790 tractors with the 419 loader on them.

John Deere Parts Catalog

The superseded parts list seem to show the same part number for the 419 and 420 boom and mast.

I noticed that too. The 790 mount looks very similar to the mount that goes for the 420 on the 870, 970, 1070 but for it doesn't list the 790. I will have to do more research in the JD parts catalog so if the part numbers are the same.

The photo I found of a 790 with a 419 loader shows the mast mount going up and back.

I can't find a photo of an 870 with anything other than a 440 or 460 loader but they all have mast mounts coming straight out like on my 4310.

Looks like the only difference between the 419 and 420 loader is actually the loader mount. It's appears the 790 has a frame/sub-frame where the loader mounts go. The 4000 series has mounting holes already in the transmission case I believe.

As others have said the part numbers for the mast and boom are the same for the 419 and 420 so if you get a set of mounts for a 419 loader it should accept the 420 loader. Pic shows a loader mount for the 419.

The main question is: Does your 790 already have loader control?

The OP hasn't checked back since the time he/she posted their first post. Maybe not too interested, but the conversation is interesting, nonetheless. :)

Some good detective work by the TBN'rs
