Industrial or Ag tyres

/ Industrial or Ag tyres #21
Hi, many thanks for all the input. I definitely spend all my time in the fields and much of it is hilly so ags certainly seem the way to go. What I have on my current my tractor. It was just what the guy from Mahindra said. The quote for the extra $700 for ag tyres came direct from Mahindra Ag in Australia. Personally it seems ridiculous that there should be any cost difference.

Is there anything on the dealers lot that you can simply "swap" the R4's for the ags? It should cost you nothing to do so. The reality is that tire for tire, R4's are more expensive than ags by quite a bit. More plys. More rubber and thus more expensive to make.

If our Australian friend is talking about 700 AUD, that's 518 USD. A little more reasonable considering that 200 is probably just for busting off the R4s and mounting the R1s. My hunch is that Mahindra Australia has too many R4s and not enough R1s to meet demand so they are providing a price incentive to move the R4s. And I have to confess that I'm Scotch enough to take the R4s and live with them until I can wear them out. Either way, you can't go wrong, mate.

remember that the wheels must be changed as well. R1 wheels makes the tractor narrower, unless you adjust the wheels to the maximum width, if the wheels turn out to be adjustable, some are, some aren't. The r1's are also higher and give you a higher center of gravity...something to consider on hills and lifting high loads.

I do not believe the rims are the same for R1's to R4's, at least that is how I remember it when I bought mine

I had looked at changing my Ag tyres out for Industrial but found I would have to buy new rims as the Industrials were a lot wider.
Mine is fitted with Ag BKT tyres and I just replaced the front with Titans. The Titans have 1 1/2 lugs for every 1 lug on the BKT tyres. They are also a heck of a lot tougher (more plies) than the BKT tyres and feel a lot better when using the FEL Cost is a little bit more but well worth it.
They have less chance of being staked as well as the sidewalls are that much tougher.
I guess it depends on what Ag tyres they want to fit?

Well if that means you'll be plowing fields you probably want Ags. Your dealer should not be putting you through all this nonsense. He should be guiding you in what the proper tire is for your needs and not charge you extra for what you need. That's the way it's done here anyway. For a new tractor anyway. A used machine is another kind deal altogether.

Growing up, I spent summers on my grandfathers farm, drove a Case Vac by myself 68 years ago, I have owned several tractors over the last 32 years, they all had R1 Ag tread rear tires. The thing that surprised me about R4 Industrial tires, is that they will slide sideways on a muddy side hill, where a R1 will keep going straight.

The R1 definitely has more pulling power.

Guess what tire is on my loader. :D

They are about bald though. A fresh set of r4s could beat those.

May be an indicator of how good or bad that dealer is too. It may also be a sign to head for the door and shop elsewhere. My dealer always said I could have the tires I wanted on the tractor for no extra charge. He does other stuff for no charge too, including delivering the tractor to my place. They also handle on site warranty and warranty transportation should it be necessary at no cost.
I think when you're shopping tractors a lot of it is shopping dealers too. No matter how bad or good a product may be, a crappy dealer can make any product seem the same. Nickle and diming you is not the sign of a good dealer so I didn't spend much time at all at the local JD dealer. Same with Kubota etc.. Even though I know they likely have good products, they do need to pay more attention to who is selling them and how. A poor dealer makes for a poor product and a poor rep.

2+, even though in my case it was clearly the local Kubota dealer that shined. (and has continued to...)

But then it would slide sideways on a side slope .

The tires were used when I bought them over thirty years ago, and put them on this garden tractor.

Put two of them on the TORO on 12/31/2004.
