yep.. that's what I use.

sometimes the hobble ( tieing legs close together with string ) will do it. I've had 50/50% success rate on turkey, and 90% on chicken. also.. the faster they grow witht he spraddle.. the harder to save. I hold off on the high protien chick feeder and keep them on regular feed till the spraddle starts to clear. then i put them on grower/startrer. otherwise you got a bird with weak legs that puts on body weight faster than it's legs get better and you get a big chick laying on it's side. worse with turkey. and yeah.. sand paper works great. 320-80 any of that works.. 400+ is too smooth.. and 60 is too expensive.. use the yellow stuff. not hte black stuff.

I also use this paper to coat perches in my bird cages..

Chris,

My regular flock builder feed is pellet because I have ducks and chickens in the same "flock"... Can't feed pellet to the little guys...

Seriously using sand paper... crimadiddly...

sure you can feed the pellets.

did you know when they pmake the feed.. it's peleted that is then roll crushed :)

anyway.. the small amount you will need. maybee make a cup at a time.. take the cup of pellet feed and put it in yer blender.. spin it up a few times.. a coffee grinder will work too.

keeping them growing slow the first 2-3 days helps the leg handle their weight.. whereas that hi-pro starter feed will start makingthe them grow huge.. fast..

Chris,

I know, I thought of that as soon as I posted... Excellent point.

If I might just say this, You are really awesome and very helpful. Beers at my place anytime you are in town.

You have helped me MANY times, not just this time. And this situation was depressing me and my girls.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

just trying to help out another fowl farmer. I've BTDT with the birds.. and spraddle was a perplexing one till we figured it out with the sand paper and regular feed. we actually will feed the starter tot he rest of the chicks, and try to segregate the spradled ones so they don't get trampled... the regular feed keeps them growing slow and alive, and lets those weak muscles or tendos whatever it is.. get caught up.. then when walking ok.. put the starter to them.

Royal palm turkey I found sometimes difficult.. some mothers were not broody and we had to hand raise more than we wanted. on some bad cases of spraddle, we even made lil props and small shelters for them to pretty much stand and ballance in. IE.. they have a 'hallway' to walk to get to food and water, and doing so kept them upright and all till their legs caught up. was more work than they were ' worth' but I like animals and don't mind helping them out if possible...

Chris,

The one with a whole side paralyzed has died, as has the 2nd best walker of the 3 we hobbled. Right now I am only aiming to save one of the whole batch, the rest will not make it... The 3rd we hobbled cannot get onto his feet and stay there...

BUt I have a NEW problem! The ONE who is actually walk/hopping and growing is having an "elimination" issue. It builds up all over his rear and he gets a serious mound of guano there.

I know this is NOT GOOD, and limits his chances. I have been cleaning it off and even soaking his fanny in the water so I can clean him but e has an issue.

I will say the hobble is NOT in his way. I have watched and checked.

1 - What is it called? 2 - What can I do?

1 - pasty butt

2 - clean it off. rinse. repeat.

PB is usually caused by stress. Can also be due to too warm conditions. Excess sugar in water. Most chicks have some form of it as they transition from absorbing the yolk to actually eating feed. The change in diet can cause bowel problems. Most are OK after a couple of days.

ditto that, keep him clean.. he should be ok.. make sur ethere is enough fresh water to drink, and make a place he can regulate his heat.. like a rectangluar bow with the heat lamp aiming in a cormer, so he can walk away from it if needed..

Update 0500 6/20/12

Pasty Butt is still hobbled and alive, the rest are all dead. The last two did not make it through the night.

I believe it was too hot and dry in the location we were using so I moved them to a cooler location and removed the heat lamp. Might be too soon for that, but my biggest question is will PB make it now that it is alone? Do I risk combining him with his brothers, the 3 which are now 5 weeks old? Probably not or HECK NO! is what I expect to hear.

How do I keep him OK all by himself?

Thanks in advance,
David

by himself I would think, if not walking good.

make it so he can still get to the heat lamp but can get away from it too. have the heat lamp backed away as well... with no brood to sleep with he'll get cold.

if he's not eating good, put food in a red dish, or red marbles in his food dish.. or an old bit of silver or gold jewlry that is too large to swallow.. like a wedding band or hoop earing. they like to pick at red or shiney things..

Too late... He is faltering. He was not cuddled with the 2 that died overnight, I suspect that was too much for him...

Dangnamit... This sux...
