You prolly would have broken the band, or bent the anchor. After the adjustment did you notice any difference in shifting?

After thinking it over and over.. I decided that I am going to have a shop do the work for me (just paying for labor - i have all the parts) .. The biggest factor was I didnt want the mess of dropping the pan all over my relatively clean garage floor.. Also I have a friend that was going to help me (he has done a lot more stuff like this than I have) and he hasnt had time lately and I want to get it done soon..

But I am also having them install a B&M drain plug in the pan, so future changes wont be messy..

I reckon what I dont really understand is why a repair manual would use the terms interchangeable within the same repair section.. Why not stick with one unit or the other.. IMHO it would cause more confusion to an amateur like me.

The first time I read the band adjustments section I didnt pay any attention to the lbs/in, I just saw the '72'.. Only after re-reading it 4 or 5 times it finally hit me - hmm.. this doesnt look right..

Congratulations. You learned this WITHOUT breaking anything!

Here's a tip: That torque value isn't really THAT critical. When I do band adjustments, I just snug up the adjuster, then back off the set amount (depending on which trans, which drum, & which lever ratio).

The rest of this "conversation" reminds me of the old MOTOR vs ENGINE debate. :D IMHO pounds per feet & feet per pounds equals the same torque value, & that's what's being discussed: Torque. Apply 10 pounds to a 1 foot bar (ft/lbs). Apply 1 pound to a 10 foot bar (lb/ft). Both create the same amount of torque.

As dbdartman said the 72 in lbs isn't super critical. Just snug it then back it off the specified ammount. If anything I back the adjusters off a little less then specified.

Some of the aftermarket drain plugs stick down quite a bit, so you may want to consider having them put it on the side of the pan instead of the bottom.

Then maybe I misread your post, sorry about that if I inferred something I shouldn't have. We agree on a lot of things, like one unit of measure being essentially the same as another. Where we don't agree is that I would rather have one global standard (and democracy says most of the world uses metric so we are the odd man out) but you don't seem to think it's important what units we use. Whatever your reasoning it's simply a difference of opinion and obviously not worth arguing over since neither of us have the ability to actually change anything anyway.

No offense taken, I'm probably more sensitive to the issue then most because I'm constantly jumping between both systems.
Yesterday I was working on a design using linear guides and bearings , one book expressed the load ratings in kN-M (newton meters) and the other in kgf-m (kilogram force meters) the conversion value was 1 to 0.101971621!!! This makes inch/pound - foot/pound conversion look easy.
