I'm still new to trailers and axles but here is a simple observation on the axles I have used (MH and commercial, AL-KO).

Axles that route the brake wires thru the tube have the access holes in the side of the tube. This allows rain and splash to get in and not get out. Why aren't the holes on the bottom so that the water drains out? I've routed conduit acound my trailer giving access to power on both ends of the axle, removed the in-tube wire and welded it closed.

I put silcone around the holes on mind, or what ever you perfer, that would help.

Not sure. I have personally only see one axle fail and it was a MH axle. I have seen burnt up spindles, bent spindles, ect but only one tube failure.
