Impossibly long thread about grease?

It seems motor oil and to some extent hydraulic and transmission fluid have been uhhhh..... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gifdiscussed /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif.... to a point. But what about good ole grease? I seem to remember replacing more ball joints, wheel bearings, and pivot pins than engine kits in the past. What are y'all's thoughts on lowly grease? Has that industry kept up w/ the motor oil people in terms of improvements and specializations?

I wouldn't know since I only use Amsoil and that's for the last 16 years. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif No grease failures in that time frame and that's good enough for me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No. And it may not be possible. I think that the longer intervals between oil changes do not take into account greasing intervals, therefore as you said, worn out ball joints, etc. I spend a lot of time driving on gravel roads, so I try to throw a little grease in my vehicle in between oil changes. Now if I can get my wife to do the same.........

Interesting point on the extended drains affecting the application of grease. I fell under my recently purchased Explorer the other day for service. As the oil drips I normally hit the grease fittings. Guess what?! Not a fitting one on the front end of that Explorer. Nothing on the driveline either (I like greaseable U-joints). I wonder how many other vehicles out there are like that? No grease, just lots of rubber and poly bushings. I wonder what that will be like at repair time? I know great leaps and bounds have been made w/ sealed bearings, but I would still rather squirt a little grease in there from time to time.

My 02 4X4 F250 only has 4 grease fittings, and they are on the steering linkage. With 7 u joints I know it's going to get expensive somewhere down the road.

Use a good quality grease such as Mobil EP 2, or equivalent, Lithium base, some like the graphite additive, some like water resistance, especially in wet climates.

With regard to Tractor Grease, I would buy two grease guns-why? Different Grease charicteristics. In areas such as Bucket pivot pins, steering linkages, anywhere two items rotate against each other I would use a Grease with a Molybdenum Disulfide additive. For all other places (wheel bearing,etc.-items that turn at a fast rate I would use a good high pressure Lithium Grease-
