Back in 05 I bought a MX6 bush hog. Last week I hit a stump and knocked off the stump jumper and sheared a shaft. A local repair guy told me JD quit making replacement parts due to some problem they were having. Instead, I have to buy a whole new gear box and everything for a whopping $1500! This is crazy! When does a manufacturer quit making replacement parts for something that is only five years old?

I dunno, but I have the same unit, same age. Just backed into a stump and bent under the back edge so the blades impacted it and actually cut a hunk away. Steel is too thick to bend back by hand, I'll have to have it heated and bent back and then maybe weld in a little extra steel back there.
Nothing broke though.
Luckily.
I'd try a different dealer. That doesn't sound like JD to me.

Try going to your Deere dealer for the parts. Might be the local repair guy doesn't know.
Not typical at all of Deere to not have parts. But sometimes parts of parts, they don't have, and a vertical shaft going into a gear box that has matched gears could just be involved here.

What shaft was sheared?

Was there a slip clutch not adjusted properly, or maybe the shear bolts didn't shear?

Bummer.

Maybe they service it as a unit, not individual pieces. JD is known for having parts availability for 20 plus year old machines. A big reason why many farmers stick with deere.

According to the Parts online there are two lower shaft choices the early model used the CE18354 may wan't to check that out. You will need your serial number to determine which shaft is correct. From what I could see the gears are sold in pairs, which makes sense to me.

FWIW, the shaft sells for $330.75 (CE18354)

You can add 30 years to that....Just the other week my FIL was looking around for some assorted normal service parts for his 420C which I believe is a 1955...parts were still available from the dealer...when you factored in shipping, headaches and a good dealer relationship, the dealer wasnt priced TOO much higher. Also...the aftermarket is FULL of parts for old JD's....even if you cant get along with your JD Dealer, parts are only a phone call or click away. I know when I rebuilt my 1988 model year F935, everything I've needed to date has been available from my dealer.

Long story short is you may not like the price, but there has been very few times a green machine ends up useless because a part is NLA.

Before believing your local repair guy I'd log into jdparts.com and check it out for sure.

Another possibility is having a machine shop make you a new shaft. Might be less than $300, certainly less than $1500.
I think I paid $1500-1600 new for mine.

Before you get ticked at JD, and post it on the internet, why don't you contact JD, rather then taking the word of a local repair shop;)

I might be wrong but i thought JD only sold their parts to JD dealers. I've never seen JD parts sold at any Tractor supply, Agri Supply, or any other non JD store. I'd check with the dealer.
Good Luck
