As to danger, more than one person has lost a limb or a life to an auger. Just be sure to exercise appropriate care and caution. A Kubota 2910 ought to handle a post hold digger without too much concern. It all depends on your soil, of course. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Paul - the safety aspect can't be over-emphasized. Rotating equipment is extremely dangerous. The PHD exposes you to 2 rotating items, the PTO shaft and the auger. And the others were not exagerating when they mentioned tearing off limbs and/or killing people. If you read the safety forum regularly, you will often seen posts of people being maimed or killed because they got a piece of clothing or a glove or other loose article caught in the rotating device and it pulled them in before they knew it. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Frightening to read about.

And it is not just the auger, but what it may pick up. A friend of mine nearly lost a leg when the PHD he was using found some old barbed wire buried in the grass along an old fence line. The wire whipped around and nearly severed his leg before his son could stop the PTO. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Make sure you check the area thoroughly before you start drilling!

Hey, I bought that same PHD at TSC.... I also have not had the opportunity to give it a workout yet... You mean that thing doesn't have reverse on it???? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You'd think that by now, these would come with a reverse gear for the very reason you mentioned BB_TX.... If you are a little to zealous with it, you just may find yourselve looking for a BH /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I never gave it a thought one way or the other on the reverse thing. I guess I sort of assumed you could reverse them but now that I think about it being PTO powered, I don't know why I assumed that.

Whats the procedure, then? Do you drill a bit then lift it up to clear the dirt?

I just bought a Speeco with a 9 inch auger at an auction for $180. Light duty, but I have a foot of black dirt and three feet of sand so it is easy to dig on my place.

Hi,

About a month ago I bought a Rhino [forget the model number already /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif] with 9" and 14" augers and a slip clutch. Cost about $1,100 for the works. The one I got had the larger boom and cat 1 or 2 usablility.

My B2910 Kubota has no problem with the 14" auger. Simply amazing how easy it is to dig a hole. I grin ear to ear as I clean out the bottom with that old hand digger.It is a real pleasure to clean out the bottom of those holes! I guess you can only uderstand the feeling if you have experience digging holes with a digging bar and hand digger in dry weather [or any weather for that matter...]

Anyway, don't worry...your B2910 will drive the post hole digger just fine.

Exactly right. The auger is spinning and when you lift it out of the hole the dirt gets slung off. Not only don't you want to get the auger stuck in the hole, you also don't want to load it up with the weight of so much dirt that the tractor can't lift it out of the hole. If your front tires come off the ground when you try to lift out the auger you know you are in trouble /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We all know that spinning objects on a tractor are dangerous.

But we forget. And that makes it dangerous.

It is so 'easy' to have someone help you dig a post hole. With a shovel, they can clear away a little dirt, help line things up. When your teeth get dull & the ground gets hard, they can lean on the phd frame and add a little down force. Always - "just this one time, we'll be careful". Pretty soon, it becomes commonplace, and the helper is standing 6" from rge phd all the time.

And that whipping piece of old barbed wire shows up. Or a sleeve gets caught in the pto or auger. Or you hit a rock & it bounces the auger around.

That is the danger of a post hole digger. It's so easy with a helper, and we forget.....

The danger is not that your tractor can't handle it, but the fact that an unforgiving PTO is spinning it. Enjoy the PHD but be careful /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
