IH 886 Universal Ignition Starter Switch Wiring

Greetings:

I bought a Universal Ignition Starter Switch for our old IH 886. The new switch has four terminal posts and four positions. The IH switch has five terminals and three positions. Any ideas how to wire it up?

Take the universal back and get the right switch, but make sure you keep the nut off the old switch. To replace that nut is like $8. Doing this may cost you a few dollars more now, but what is it worth if you miss wire and burn out something really expensive?

If you can still get the old switch to operate a bit, go around the switch checking which cables and terminal/s have power all the time and mark those cables. Then check which have power at the first position clockwise, then the second, third and fourth (presumably spring loaded). Mark each group of cables seperately and clearly. I suspect one terminal 9and its cables) has the same function as another.


Then on the new switch connect the "power all the time" cables to the input terminal, from there you can progress the switch to find the terninals to which the second and third group of wires need to be connected.

Thank you for your prompt replies. Further examination determined that the fault lay not with the old switch but elsewhere in the wiring harness. My auto parts man was kind enough to allow me to return the unused switch. Most places will not take back electrical parts, but things are different here in a small
town. Thank you again for your help.
