Hi Guys
Im just looking at buying an IH 444 - the newer model - and i am told that there is a preheater but the owner doesn't have a clue how to work them and i can't seem to see how it would work. Does the round thing that looks like a pepper pot have something to do with it?
Apparently there was a new ignition fitted a few weeks ago and I'm wondering if perhaps the wrong ignition was fitted as it had been suggested to me about turning counterclockwise or pushing the key in an extra stage to get the plugs to work but neither of these options seem possible on this ignition. Perhaps i should try get a look at the old ignition as i see it is on the floor of the cab and see if it has any different positions?
Can anyone help me with this?
Merry Xmas to all :):)

Picture?

But it sounds like you have an old style glow indicator, if it was working it would be red hot after a few seconds of heating.

Do you have any user manual for it?

No. It is a friend who is selling as it was her late husbands and she has no idea where anything is. He had had the tractor since new so it is possible she could have one. I spoke with someone last night and they suggested that you might just have to turn the key to the first position before you crank it?

Yes, several tractors have heat between ignition and start position.

I do think there are workshop manuals for download on the net.

On a tractor I used (might have been an IH ?) a lot of years ago, that "pepper pot" grill covered a resistance heater element. In lower light conditions, you could see the heater element start to glow red, once you were holding the key in the correct Pre-Heat position.

Not sure if that is exactly how yours is set up today.... but thinking about that sure takes me back a long ways....
