I've almost completed a brake rebuild on my !H2444. All of the linkages on the left side were rusted away. They are fairly easy to fabricate. The right side casting was full of grease/oil. At first I thought it was due to a leaky seal but upon inspection I don't see any leakage. It is a mystery where the grease or oil came from. Any one have a guess?
The only thing I have left to do is to connect the pedal return springs. For the life of me, I can't remember where they were connected. Can any one help with an explaination or picture?

Here is a picture of the brake assembly. For some reason I'm thinking the spring attaches to a notched out spot in the footboard.

Is your differential the hydraulic reservoir..?? I have a 240, and had a 2404 for a short while. The 240's reservoir is rather small, and up on the torque tube, I kinda' forget about the 2404...

If your fluid level is up in the differential, then I don't have a clue. I do know, when the seals were bad on the bull pinion shaft on my Super C, the inboard bull pinion shaft bearing was shot, and I replaced it. That has been over 16 years ago, and still nice and dry.

hydraulic oil can leak from the o-rings in the hydraulic cover and settle in the brakes. Look for traces of leaks above the brakes.

DJ54- Your memory has proven to be correct. The springs attach to the rear of the foot plate.

Thanks,

I had a IH 424 and it was a very similar tractor and had brakes like this. The brakes are a problem if the tractor sits outside water seeps in around the cast cover and lets it all rust up. I thought about sealing the cover with silicone at least the upper portion to seal out any water that may migrate in during a rain.
