Hardly a humorous event. A family came home from vacation, flipped on a light switch and the entire home was demolished by the resulting explosion.

The only difference I can see - if it's gonna blow up - you will be a goner no matter where you are. The "don't do it in you house option" simply saves the house - not the "doer".

This happens from time to time; most likely a gas leak somewhere. Gas accumulation in an enclosed space can really go "boom!"

I was going to speculate gas, from the debris picture, there was no epicenter, and no sign of fire. Looks like perfect mix in all the rooms. To bad no video of it.

The local news feed included a shot of the rear of an excavator during the rescue phase of the response. There was a large Piedmont Natural Gas decal visible on the counterweight. I’m not sure what to read into that, if anything. Ambient temps were near 100 during the whole event, emergency services folks worked hard in difficult conditions.
