I'm seventy years old and it suddenly occurred to me that I hadn't heard a toothpaste commercial mention "Gardol" lately and I didn't know exactly what chemical it contained.

I'm seventy six and remember Colgate toothpaste as well as several other no longer existent brands. I seem go vaguely remember the name Gardol but I'm not sure I would have drawn the connection to the Colgate brand, though perhaps I would have. I'm usually pretty good with stone age trivia.

my beef has always been fluoride.

Replaced by safer ingredients in rat poison but used in drinking water and toothpaste.
I try to stay away from talking about this because I get sounding like one of those nut cases who rant about alien creatures running the U.S. Government.

Until I looked it up I thought Gardol might have been what Colgate called floride. Hadn't thought about it for years until the other day when I bought tooth paste. They probably didn't make an announcement when the name was changed.

I thought maybe it was something like Veedol. Now that's a product a farmer would be familiar with.

Maybe this old commercial will refresh some memories. Gardol was the "Invisible Shield" that Colgate was always talking about.

I recall Jerry Mahoney telling Paul Winchell that he was a running back in college, and was never tackled. Paul asked, "how could that be?" Jerry said that he went to school at Colgate, and they couldn't get through his invisible shield. Ba dump.

After watching Jerry Mahoney and seeing a ventriloquist dummy in the Sears Catalog, I didn't understand when my grandfather said it couldn't really talk.
