Hey SFB's...try standing on the beach with a hand-held VHF radio (These radios have a range of up to 35 miles depending on the output wattage...the are line of sight with just rat tail antennas)...have another person in a boat sitting on the horizon with a similar radio...as long as the two radios are in line of sight the will work...as soon as the boat goes (away from the beach) out of sight the radios will no longer work...now add a longer antenna and as long as the tip of one antenna is in line of sight they will work...
having the power to transmit long distances has nothing to do with one radio being able to receive a signal...like most of the proven science discussed in this thread it goes right over your head...just like radio signals that don't have tall enough antennas...
