If it looks like an Optima battery then.....

While shopping At Sams Club a couple of weeks ago I came accross batteries that looked like Optima batteries, but were black and had another brand name on them ... sorry can't remember the brand name.

Are these batteries made by Optima ? or a copycat ? In either case does anyone know if they are any good ? They are quite a bit cheaper than genuine Optima yellowtops, etc...

Optima is just a brand name owned by Johnson Controls. Optima does not make any batteries they are all made by Johnson Controls. They also make batteries for Wal*Mart (EverStart) among many of the other brands they make.
Hopefully what you saw was a less expensive version of the Optima being made for the Wal*Mart (Sams Club) companies.

I've been looking at these batteries. Are they really that much better than traditional plate batteries? They sure are priced as if they were.

Nelson for those of us that have had acid damage done to our tractors caused by conventional lead acid batteries Optima's are priceless.

You can literally mount these batteries upside down with no spillage of acid.

Ive heard that the Optima s are a great add on for DEMO DERBY cars /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif as they have to usually set close to the driver and if you use regular LEAD type batterys, even incased in a battery box as the demos require per most rules) the acid can get bumped out and around enough to maybe get on you... the other thing they like them for is that they are "practically" indestructable... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
