at work, the guy in the back office has a win 7 laptop.. it had ie 10 on it... I installed ie 11 on it as he had started to complain that ie was randomly stopping on him now and then. at the time i found out he was never shutting it down, just sleeping it every day for months. I told him to start shutting down every few days to see if that helped. nope.. still more whining messages sticky note'd to my desk every few days. Installed 11... has been quiet 2 weeks. now the stoppages are back. system is running kaspersky internet security and gets daily updates.

I am , apparently the only one in the office with even moderate computer skills, so i'm tired of these darn sticky notes appearing on my desk.

any ideas? Please don't say switch to chrome or firefox or any other non IE website. We have a couple govt websites that we 100% must use IE on. And yes.. I know we can install chrome and use it and then IE ont he other sites.. but this guy won't understand how / when to do so.. and will whine about his saved favorites.. and I'm not exporting the 3000 fav sites he's bookmarked back there while he stares into the 'portal' daily.

any OTHER ideas other than switching browsers?

I too have windows 7 and IE 10 and my machine just stops and locks up every now and then. This is one instance our Glug system will not work so I just reboot.

In my experience when something like this happens to a Win. system...it is often caused by "automatic updates" or at least something in the updates...often there are "non-critical" updates that are suspect...

Is a system restore to previous restore point an option ?

I have Win 7, ie 11 and Kaspersky and have no problems. I do shut my machine down every night. My suggest run disk cleaner (cleanmgr.exe), be surprised how much wasted space is out there. Clean out windows temp. Check and see what he has installed and uninstall what is not needed. Run msconfig and see what he has running at startup and what services. If you have not already done it run Kaspersky full scan. Run disk defragmenter, it does some checking if there are problems on the disk. In gadgets you can put CPU meter on the disk top and he can see if there is high CPU and or high disk use.

If you run disk cleaner, do not get nervous if it runs awhile.

to /pine:

it might have been back when it was starting.. but it's been doing this for about a month now.. so a safe restore point is likely looooong gone.

to murphy:

I hear ya on the reboots. heck. at least once a week I'll get something weird that makes either my email client or an explorer windo get weird and I just relaod it. 99% of the time if explorere dies.. when it comes back you can have it relaod all the past windows that crashed.. and they -usually- come up fine.... it SHOULD be a non issue.. but I keep getting these whiney lil notes on my desk.... :(

I've rolled back Explorer 11 to 10 because there has been a major problem with some websites (eBay for example) and some mail systems (Yahoo) because of HTML translation failures. Its actually quite a puzzle to remove IE11. They really don't want you to do it, but its possible. If you delete IE 11, it rolls 11 back to 10.

I also run Windows 7 on my 3 laptops and have noticed the lockup issue. It is because some sites (and users) start up a new tab in the browser whenever a new website is mapped (selected or mapped from a bookmarked list). By the end of the day, you may have a dozen or so hidden tab extensions that are problems for memory management, security leaks, and user response times.

To solve the problem, I've avoided using bookmarks (which always open a new tab) and gone back to using just the IE Favorites bar. Also, when IE stalls, you can go to Task Manager and Use the "End" or "End Process Tree" function (right click) to kill all the extra "iexplore.exe*32 tasks that are excess, especially those that are using a large amount of memory. I believe these website graphics are chewing up all the computer's memory resources and that is what is stalling the main Explorer task, especially on a laptop with limited memory size.

You can also probably go to IE's security section and limit popups, tabs and other settings that users select or think they must have (like cookies). I've also removed Java upon the recommendation that its a major cause of security violations and information leaks.

Lastly, it you have not used the IE "hosts" file to prevent some websites from sending ads, and other unwanted material, now is the time. This file can contain web addresses of those sites that hog all your memory, waste you time and confuse na?e users about free Viagra, you've won a new computer, you have a virus and any other information you do not want sent. IE looks in the hosts file to see if a site is blocked and then sends it to never-never land. Its sort of like a do-not-call list only this one works.

Google "hosts file" for more info.

Here are a few of my hosts file shiit list entries:

The 127.0.0.1 is a web address that doesn't exist, so Explorer routes it to the twilight zone. Yes I realize that some TBN pages pull up these ads and annoyances. You can find the hosts file under the "c:/windows/system32/drivrs/etc" folder. Edit it with Notepad (use the run as administrator feature) in order to save the new contents. Then, when you are annoyed by a website, just copy its url into the hosts file and it will be ignored. The doubleclick one is especially nasty because it prevents your back-arrow function from working. Instead, it sends you to an ad page.

This is my experience as well, Also I found that iE 11 doesn't work with some programs I prefer to use, So I backed up to iE10... actually some of the latest Updates that install on Windows 7 have to do with incorporating the future use of Windows 8, I don't allow these updates as I have no intentions of using windows 8 in the near future,
I'm thinking that the iE 11 was designed to work best with Windows 8,
Try doing this:
Go to control panel... System Security.... Windows Update.... View installed updates.... remove the ones that have anything to do with Windows 8 , Go back to Windows update... open the ( Important Update tab),
Highlight "check for Updates but let me choose to download" reboot system, when it reboots you'll notice that the flag will be red and will recommend to set it back, But for the time being don't pay any attention to this, monitor the computer for a week or so and see if this helps and check back to let us know,
