IDIOT!

Most around these parts will drive with some form of illumination - 24/7. But then there are always the "too cool idiots".

Three years ago. Just about this time of the year. Here comes a "too cool idiot" up behind me. He is going, at least, 15 to 20 mph over the limit. It is dark - it is foggy - the idiot has no form of illumination showing. He pulls out and zooms past me. Seven miles up the road - there he is, stuck deep in the ditch and snow drift.

I stopped. I could see he was alone and not injured. So I said to him - "I see you got where you were going. Have a good day and carry on ". I drove off.

Full time use of headlights is what I would like to see.
Currently it’s way to easy to accidentally forget to turn headlights on.

Maybe it was me you pulled out in front of. Except it was foggy and I had my high beams on in my car. You drove the dark SUV with no lights on and went 5 miles an hour in a 55 zone. Then you turned without signalling. Thanks.

I've been seeing a lot of this lately. I blame it on auto on headlights. Some people are so used to them they don't confirm that their lights are on. I see lots with just daytime running lights on, and some with none at all. Dash lights come on with daytime running lights I believe, allowing a false sense of security. Manufacturers should only make the dash lights come on with the actual full compliment of lights. It may help.
I have to admit I've kind of gotten to like the "always on" dash lights. GM vehicles at least have an indicator that shows if the headlights are on.
When my wife drove my previous truck she'd sometimes forget to turn on the headlights until it got almost dark, she was used to her car with auto headlights.
Yeah it is a huge problem I've been noticing. Also the DTRs are bad because idiots rely on them vs. putting on their light and then as was stated they have no lights in the rear. This is something automakers could fix.

I'm not a fan of regulation usually but the headlight thing should not be left up to idiot drivers. Lights should just always be on in my opinion.
GM vehicles have had auto headlights (at least as an option) for 30-odd years. My old '95 Beretta had them.
On some automotive forums you still see rants from people who for some reason hate DRLs, so you can't please everyone.
That's why I enjoy riding motorcycles. I KNOW I am responsible for every other driver on the road as well as myself.
Keeps me aware! On my toes. responsible! The penalty for not, can be quite harsh.
That's why I STOPPED riding motorcycles back in the 80s. Too many drivers who were oblivious to them.
I had to dump one time because someone who was parked on the side of the road pulled out & did a U turn maybe 50 yards in front of me (with me going 55 or so).
Lots of child trafficking are with black SUVs and no lights to keep literally hidden on the rural roadways. Their movements are often at night like this. How they know where the road is? They are using night vision devices. Much of the time these people are heavily armed too. If you did get a glimpse of the plate, chances are, its out of state.
???
Never heard of that. Glad I don't live in your neighborhood.

Better yet eliminate the light switch and have ALL the lights come on when the engine is running and do away with the automatic high-low beams. Put attention back on the road and not the phone or entertainment system or whatever.

Driving home this evening I pulled out too close for comfort in front of an SUV that was going about 50 MPH. The driver honked at me. I didn't see the SUV until I was already pulling out onto the road. It was late dusk, almost night time dark, the SUV was black, and had no lights on. Not even daytime driving lights. It was totally dark. How the hell was I supposed to see the vehicle? I coulda been T-boned. The only vehicle I could see on the road was way far away and I could only make out its lights so I thought I was safe. So the IDIOT driving the black SUV with no lights on honks at me because I pulled out too close. If I could have seen the vehicle I wouldn't have pulled out. What is wrong with people that drive with no lights at dusk? GRRR.

You mention "Day Time Running Lights" Here in Canada they have been Mandatory since 1990. Saved me Plenty of times

However, up until 2013 or so, if We Exported one into the USA, we had to Disable the "Day Time Running Lights", in order to Clear US DOT Rules. Stupid Huh? We had to Unplug them or later, go into the Body Control Module and shut the feature off.

Another "Must" on newer GM Trucks, the Passenger Air Bag light is a Picture with a Line through it in Canada, US Regulations states it has to be Words (Passenger Air Bag Off) so we have to change the Lens

I know that neither of you were in the pickup without a clue what "merge" means. Just as the lanes started to narrow he flew past me, then cut me off because the car in front of him was in the way. We engaged in a waving contest, while I suggested in the mirror that he takes driving lessons. A mile up the road he pulled over into a parking lot... And waited for traffic to clear because he was going the wrong way.

With DRL's, the rear lights should be on also. At least this way, when foggy, you might be able to see them from behind! I like the fact that in my truck, wipers on - lights on!

I never thought about taillights until people started mentioning it here on TBN. On crappy days (like today) I try to toss a glove over the sensor, making it think it's night time.

There are times when I do want the lights shut off. Backing out of the driveway with the lights reflecting off the garage door is a pain. There is a big hill at the mouth of my road with a house directly across. First thing in the morning I prefer to shut the lights off so that I am not lighting up their house while sitting at the stop sign, or blinding the drivers going past.
