Went to a bootlegger. I have not heard that expression used in quite a while. Arkansas is one of the few states I believe that has dry counties.

Alabama still has several dry counties, including Fayette County where I reside. We used to have lots of bootleggers, too. Now, everyone wanting an alcoholic beverage just drives to the Tuscaloosa County line or to the city of Jasper in Walker County (Walker County is dry, but the city of Jasper is wet).

Later,

gemini5362, I live just outside of Batesville about 7 miles. And, yes we had bootleggers, in times passed. There may still be some for all I know. At any rate, I remember taking a guy to one, many years ago, and when I got there the Sheriff's car was sitting there. The guy I drove up there went right in the house and later came out with a sack and his bottle. Needless to say, I was skeered! I wonder why he wasn't arrested? LOL

As to snakes, it is true they don't always release their full load of venom. And, even if they are not fatal, they can be very painful, and depending on your own personal chemistry, could be fatal. So I would be very careful around them.

Texas still has "local option" for liquor sales. It's not by county though, since some parts of many counties are "wet" and some parts are "dry".

When I was a kid growing up in Oklahoma, it was all dry except for 3.2 beer. And even though I never knew of any of my relatives patronizing a bootlegger, I think every kid over the age of 10 knew who and where they were. And a stranger in an area who wanted to buy a bottle could simply ask the first police officer he saw and the officer would tell him where the bootleggers were. Of course many people didn't know that and were afraid to ask an officer.

Crawford County Arkansas where I live at is still a dry county. To get alcohol you have to cross the arkansas river. which by the way is the southern boundary of Crawford County. Everyone where I live just has to drive a few miles and go over a bridge. What is interesting Fort Smith, Arkansas has liquor by the drink and liquor stores but it is in a dry county. Every other city in sebastian county is dry but when the initial vote about alcohol was made Fort Smith refused to abide by the vote and ignored it.
