Ideas to remove sheared bolt?

I have used cutting oil when drilling something like that out. I usually just get a bunch of drill bits aNd start with a small one and work my way up in size.

Ever hear of a helicoil. You drill out a little oversized, then tap the hole oversized. It comes with inserts. The outside of the inserts is threaded to the oversized threads and the inside is the original threads. It comes as a complete kit, drill bit, tap, and several of the inserts, which are stainless steel. The advantage is you can bugger up the original threads pretty bad and still go back to the original thread size. Problem you still have to get the old bolt out.

Item 1/2 is, we (he) welded a nut. I'm not sure how to word this, but he said he took a nut, reamed it out a bit so that the (internal) sides were a bit angled like \_/

My interpretation of this was so he could have more weld in there but I know so little about welding I don't know what the truth was.

Anyway, the nut just sheared off. I actually intended to get a picture of it....it's on my toolbox and forgot. It was the first fail and it was from there that we went to drilling. I had no idea carbide bits could shatter like I saw his shatter. (I was doing the drilling so had first person view!) it was really the only thing we used that got any material drilled out of that (I just remembered what he called it) the Grub Screw.

To use a phrase from my grandfather...... this guy "is a pistol". He's a very colorful personality and I say with some fear in my mind... I "get" his humor (I'm wondering what this says about me!) That said..... he will talk more than two/three teenagers at a slumber party. Seems if he's awake, he's yacking about something (usually with a humorous point of view) I enjoy being around him and learning a thing or five..... but he simply won't shut up! (I'm smiling as I say that so I don't mean it with ill intent).

This welder my brother in law brought over... has been a life saver. It's been used more for the generator than welder. I didn't have to use the contraption I (so crafty) made with the 8-3 wire and 20 amp circuits. It's probably a good thing we didn't need my contraption.

Well then, we'd have tried and failed, but still enjoyed a beverage. :laughing:

Just now got a text from The Man.

Said he's preparing to press in the bushings for the steering knuckle, got the grub pin out, made (or had?) a new replacement for it.

Went on to say he's got a couple ideas for getting the residual Kingpin out....

I might not be able to attend the process..... that silly thing called work.

Yeah.....but right now, I'm working from home!!

Machine is right out the window so I can sneak out!

Sent him a text today that I had another idea...

First: He's thinking on taking a metal rod (square stock) blow a hole in it to fit around the residual king pin and weld it. Now, we have a lever that we can pull with hands or the tractor if need be, or a come along....

I have a torque multiplier, 4:1. I let him know that I could take a sacrificial socket, weld said socket to king pin and now, we can then put the multiplier on it but can also turn it either way verses "off" like the tractor did twice.

We'll see. Looks like he's not coming over today.
