ahh.. DOMESTIC hogs.. pigs.....

not wild thangs...

Hogs are interesting regarding electric fence. I'd bring home a load of 20 or so hogs from the auction and put them in a large holding pen made out of pallets. About 6" above the bottom of the pallets was a run of wire all around the pen. The next morning all of the hogs would be in a pile in the center of the pen just about equidistant from each wall.

Granted, they couldn't see beyond the pallets but one wall was field fencing (hog wire) with electric and they didn't challenge it.

What they do is routinely test the wire to see if it is on. The hogs are willing to take a shock every once in a while. Clever buggers. That is why I wrote that electric fence could be used with hogs "to a lesser extent".

In spring they were allowed out in the pasture to feed and the pasture has electric fence like the pen had. It was all field fenced. They would test that, too. Every so often the fence would be shorted out and a round of pig herding was necessary as they would immediately root under the fence.

Can't say they are missed. But home-raised pork is quite good.

Sometimes the dogs get smart and run out knowing they only get shocked near the wire. Coming back in then becomes the problem cause they know they'll get shocked again.

Rent or borrow a lawn edger. The wire only needs to be a couple of inches below the surface. You will need to have someone follow along behind the edger with a stick to shove the wire down. It was a good job for the kids. We installed about 500 feet in a couple of hours with a rented edger that had to be nursed along to keep the idler pulley on the belt.

If you are committed to "invisible fence" why not get a length of steel rod or sharp edged angle iron and secure it to the draw bar? Steel rod or rebar should slide through the hole in draw bar and than secure above and below with clamps!
Should rip a nice trench for the wire.

No need for a sub soiler but Ted from ETA shows how to use the SS for wire install Just a thought

Weed eater.

Wire doesn't really need to be buried, just out of the way of the mower. just flip the weed eater vertical and put the wire in the slot you make.

Grass will close up the gap in a few days.

A neighbor put his fence in using a single bottom 3pt plow. just dropped it in about 2" - it rolled over a 2" thick by about 8" wide chunk of sod. Wire was layed in, and the sod flipped back.

Worked great!

In regards to the comments about the use of invisible fence.... My dogs knew when the fence wasnt working. They would listen for the warning beep. If it didnt happen, they would walk right out. We never even officially trained them. They got shocked once after the beep, and on their own, worked their way around the yard testing their boundaries.

My wife and I buried our electric "invisible" fence last year. I think it's about 1600 ft. if I remember right. Part of that goes right through our woods and that was the hardest part. I rented an edger and also used our tractor for open areas. Our problem was that it rained really hard before we got all the wire in and I had to go back over most of the trench with a pickaxe. That is a real back killer.

The fence works GREAT! The dog it's keeping in was a rescue dog that loved to run. She's about 55lbs and looks like shepherd/pit mix. I let the collar battery die and she stayed in for about 1 month like that until 2 stray dogs came into our yard. She chased them about 10ft past where she usually gets shocked and I called her back. I replaced the battery then and there and when she hears the beep and feels the vibration she backs off right away. She has NEVER even attempted to run through it. We have it cranked up pretty high so it's about 20 ft. wide, 10 ft. on each side of the wire.

I just used my Gas Trimmer/Edger to dig a groove and layed the wire down. It worked fine. just make sure you ground the box real well. They tend to blow when lightening strikes.
