I think I need to fire my optometrist.

My wife and I both got two pair of glasses. Mine are tri-focal with one pair of glass lens (dark photo gray) and the other is plastic Transition lens. My titanium frames were still good so I only had to get new lenses. Wife has only a single vision prescription and got two pair of transition lens glasses with frames. Total for both of use was $785 for 4 pairs of glasses. The glass lenses cost more than the plastic but I use them for outside work where I have to clean them regularly without water to rinse off the dust and plastic scratch up really quickly.

Cost of the glasses and the time needed to make the glasses is largely determined by the prescription, frame design/material, and lens design/material. I have a very complicated prescription - trifocal plus several other factors - so contacts are not an option. One part of my lenses is exactly 9/16" thick - as checked with my calipers! Yes, my eyes are in awful shape.

I hear ya. I too have bad eyesight. It was fairly stable for many years, but I developed a weird form of astigmatism about 12 years ago, and now my prescription needs to be updated every 18 mo. or so. I have 2 sets of good quality frames, and alternate between them each prescription change...have the new lenses put in the old frames, and keep the old pair as a spare. Because of that, I really wouldn't be saving any money using an online glasses supplier.
I did consider getting a cheap pair at Walmart, but the nearest WM that does them is a 45+ min drive away. The downside of living in Podunk.

I have been wearing Gas Permeable Contacts, (hard contacts), since about 1974.

I had soft lenses for many years until it got so my eyesight couldn't be corrected with them anymore. What surprised me was at my last visit, the doctor said that I might be a good candidate for gas permeables. Apparently they can correct problems that even regular glasses can't.

I still have a couple unused sets of the soft lenses. Can't see very well with them anymore, but they come in handy in a situation where I need to see somewhat, and there's a chance glasses might get lost. Used 'em a couple years ago on a white water rafting trip. Good thing I had them...I went over the side and my sunglasses got lost (but the contacts stayed in). Better to lose a $5 pair of sunglasses than my corrective ones!!

Never heard that one before! Please explain...what are "birth control glasses"?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the nerdy old-school coke bottle lenses, guaranteed to make you invisible to the opposite sex.

Sorry, that's a term used for the eye glasses the military issued recruits in boot camp that needed them. Nicknamed: BC (birth control) glasses because they were so ugly you sure weren't gonna get any wearing them

Thank you for the explanation. And MossRoad, thank you for the link...most of those look just like the glasses I've been wearing for the past few years. Must be why I'm single.....

love this thread. I sliced off 1/4 of my left hand pointer finger nail and associated meat last night prepping for dinner. About lunch today I got it to stop bleeding. True story. I didn't have my glasses on so I will blame them... real story. just finished sharpenng the kitchen cutlery. It cut through my nail light warm butter. I didn't realize until I had a visual clue!

I am typing with two fingers... first time since HS. That said, I am a firm believer in the best quality lens (a good doc for getting it right) and light, comfortable frames. I pay! But I demand progressive, transition, high index, space approved. We only live (and see once). Took me 5 minutes to post this. Amazing how you take out one finger and you become a Neanderthal.
