Perhaps a bit overkill, but you may want to put a real base down first, then work in the modified. This pic is in the middle of a field, 300' down and right at the start of our wood line, the ground was so soft our contractor had to keep dumping and packing concrete until it stopped. I have no idea how deep that part of the base is, but it's probably deeper than what's shown here.
