My first encounter with a copperhead was at eye level. He was in a tree I just walked by. Cottonmouths on the other hand, seem to drop out of trees with suprising regulatiry, I don't know if it is deliverate, or accidental. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I would probably have to build a new house if i found that in mine because I would have burned it down. I was fighting a house fire a while back and had been inside quite a bit of the time. After the fire was out we were carrying out some furniture and one of the fireman asked me to help carry out a fish tank that had a python in it, if I would have known that was in their I would not have been in there. The snake was dead thank God!

The picture is of a black snake. The picture is from a video my wife took. After the shock of seeing it, really close, you see I had to peek around the corner to yell at the dogs, I ran back over to get the wife. Just had to share the fun!

This one is number seven or eight that I have relocated from around the farm house. Since he/she was in the house, obviously it had to go. I just "encouraged" it into my snake bucket. A big 55 gallon garbage container. I let them go on the back forty....

I am still looking for one more in the "Snake House", not to be confused with the farm house. The "Snake House" is/was an old well house/smoke house next to the farm house, about six feet away. We have a freezer and tools in there. And we have another black snake that "hangs" around in there. It keeps the kids and my wife from getting my tools. Unfortunately, it to must go, as I don't like snakes above me. Thus, the "hanging comment".

The snake on the wall just made wonder about the adaptability of the creature. Incredible. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thank goodness my wife really likes the house. Hopefully if the major renovations start, we can seal it up a little better. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Last year just after we were married, my wife was moving some things out of her old house and found a 4' rat snake on her kitchen floor. She called me on the phone to ask how she should handle it, and it just happened I had someone with experience say she could use a paper bag. He said to just put it on the floor and kinda scare the snake with a broom and the snake would seek refuge in the bag. Instead of a bag, my wife layed a trashcan down with a black plastic liner and the snake crawled right into it. She's now my no.1 snake catcher. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looks like the common rat snake, a little too thick to be a black runner. I have several species of snakes at my farm. I've caught and released a yellow bellied watersnake and a brown/black rat snake. We have an abundance of speckled king snakes...they are the ones I relly like to see b/c they feast on poisonous snakes. When we moved in, I killed 13 water mocassins in my 3 acre pond in one week! We swim and fish there regularly, so it was them or me. My rule of thumb is if the snake poses not threat, for instance, out in the woods when I'm walking my trails, I just look at it and keep walking, poisonous or non-poisonous. We have several dogs and cats, so if it close to the house I really have no choice but to exterminate. If it is non-posinous, I let it go regardless. They do a great job keeping rodents under control the natural way. I have an old cypress barn I keep my tractors and lawnmowers in. There is a 4' long rat snake residing in there and he is welcome though he scares the **** out of me when I bend down to pick something up and voila! there he is. Believe it or not, snakes will usually run the other way when they see you and do not usually strike unless provoked.

I was cutting and splitting a dead tree. When I got to split the broken off place that had rotted out, it was about 1/2 split when I noticed something in the cavity. I took it off to the woods and dumped out a 6' pine snake. About 2 months later far from where I released the first snake I saw one in a dogwood tree, first branch was about 8' off the ground. I have seen pic of them climbing large pines too. I left all three to live as any pine snake is eating what a posionus one wants. King snakes I will make friends with.

"Is it agressive" -
Well, only when you poke at them or try and grab them. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

About a month ago, I had one "trapped" by the head, with a rake. Bad move. I attempted to reach down and grab it, to move it. Well it struck up, getting my finger. Instead of closing my hand (thumb to finger, grasp) Instinct took over and I was trying to shake it off. I was dancing with the snake dangling on my finger. It went one way, and I the other.

Last I saw of it, it was "hanging" in the tool house. It may be next years project.

riptides,

I have a picture in the camera of a snake climbing the corner of the window in my study. Outside that is. Not inside. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It was on the corner of the window and since its brick I could see how it could hold on. How yours is haning on is amazing. "Our" snake crawled over the west wall of the house and disappeared. I'm hoping it did not get in the attic....

Later,
Dan
