i need help with thinking up of an idea for this science fair /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifthere are guidelines and they are the following: NO living organisms thats including plants,NO taxidremy specimens or parts,NO preserved animals,NOhuman or animal food,NO human tissues,NO soil,NO laboratory chimacls,NO poisons,NO drugs(of any sort),NO hazardous sudstances or devices,NO dry ice or other sublimating solids,NO sharps items,NO flames or highly flammable materials,NO tanks that have pervoiusly contained combustible materials,NO batteries with open top cells,NO class 111 or 1v lasers. this is the list as i recieved(sp??) it. any help is greatly thanked the deadline for my rough idea is the 26 of january

Do a study on bookbags - girls vs. boys and the weight contents comparisons...

comparison of guidelines followed in real science compared to rules for fair.
Sounds like they only want paper.

Do hydraulics. Use syringes for cylinders and use water for fluid. Demonstrate the effects of using different displacements of cylinders and the mechanical advantages that can be obtained.

Yikes! That's not a Science Fair; that's a term paper! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif looks like GUYRJ33 beat me to it

Anyway, I read it twice; they'll still probably find a way to call this a violation, but if not:

Put a spoonful of salt in a glass of water, attach a couple paper clips (or graphite electrodes) to a 9volt battery connector. Electrodes in water, attach 9V battery, and watch the hydrogen and chlorine bubbles.

Of course, the rules forbid the most fun part of collecting and burning the hydrogen [even then not "highly" flamable unless you're putting some serious voltage to pure water and collecting both H2 & O2: boom!], but you can do that at home for your own enthusiasm! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This may fall into the no soil.

My son did a science project on bricks. He made bricks about 1" thick using different type of soil, gravel dust, brick layers sand, river sand, course and fine sand. He mixed the material with elmers glue let them dry acouple of days and then put them in the oven low heat for couple hours. He would hang weight from the middle of the bricks to see which material could hold the most weight before breaking.

A couple things I've always been curious about when I'm at the hardware store might work for you. All of my thoughts are on testing materials and products found at the store to see if they really do what they say they will, and what works best.

The new preasure treated wood is said to be very corrosive on standard nails and screws. You could test this with treated, hot diped, and various types of screws and nails.

Hardi Siding is said to be fire proof, water proof and bug proof. You could test this.

Cutting Hardi Siding with a diamond blade workd great, but a normal blade backwards is supposed to work well also. What other blades work and which is best?

You could test the various types of caulking and silicones to find the best ones, or which is the best value. Does the cheap .99 cent tube work as well as the $5 tube. Are the paintable silicones really paintable?

What about batteries? Does one brand last longer than another? How long and is there a better value to buyng cheaper batteries that last a shorter time than the priceir ones that last longer compared to the price diference and lenght of charge?

Which tape is stronger?

Which glue is better?

Which level is more accurate?

Who sells the straightest studs?

Are finger joined studs stronger than standard ones?

I can go on and on, but a trip to Lowes or Home Depot should be all you need to come up with a dozen different ideas. The best one will be what interestes you the most.

Good luck,
Eddie

Make scale tractor models and see what changes make it more stable on slopes, try, adding wheel weights, fluid filling tyres, suitcase weights, high weight, low weight

How about filling tyres on a tractor up different amounts and seeing which one is best on side slopes?

Most grippy tyre tread, some people say 23 degrees on the bars, some are 45 degrees, what is the best angle for bars on AG tyres for grip?

The rules seem a little restrictive, I can think of all sorts of cool things that you could do, best mixture for gunpowder, best mix hydrogen to oxygen for bomb, naturally though, I would never have tried these and shouldnt think anyone that likes having eyebrows does /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

best of luck, as Eddie said, the best idea is probably the most fun for you! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

how about building a scale model of a bridge out of popcicle sticks- we saw a demonstration where they tested different designs for breaking strength- after all of the work they put in to them it was hard to watch them get busted up!
