1960 MF 65
I just got an old 1960 mf 65 diesel from my uncle and it hasn't ran for a few years. He said the hyd. were slow and getting weak when he parked it, and now that I got the tractor running the lift arms don't even move. I've read that there is an internal hydraulic filter in the trans case but I don't see where. Is it hard to see it inside if you take off the pto side cover on the left side of the tractor or do I have to take off another cover entirely. Also I've read that it takes 80w or 90w mineral oil, but also read that you can put the tractor/hydraulic lighter viscosity oil in as well, is there a difference or advantage as to which oil I should be using and would tractor supply sell what I need?
Thanks in advance
Wayne

Hi Wayne I don't know what the MF 65 has for a filter.I do know that on the MF 175 that the filter is inside the trans. mounted onto the pump. The only access is taking off the top cover of the trans off in order to beable to get access. It's not a small job. Before going to that extreme do a pressure check of the hyd system. As for oil 80W-90w I don't think so.Use multi grade trans/hyd. oil. Another thing is check to see if you can find and get a manual for the MF 65 so you'll have something to go by.Sorry I can't help you and further then this.Larry

Hi,I have a MF 65 and it is a 1958 model and there is no filter the earlier models didn't have one.I pulled the side cover and used a telescoping mirror to verify it.As far as oil goes 80/90 mineral oil is what they used from the factory, but what I use is Service Pro trans/hydraulic fluid and my front end loader works very smooth. A service manual should show you the difference in the hydraulic pumps. Good luck with it, wouldn't give mine up.

My '64 MF65 called for mineral oil & had no filter.

Dmax,

Best to clean out reservoir/screens/filters ect and get a Flow/Load Test on that pump......you'll have to do a thorough cleaning anyway whether you replace the pump or not.....

After the flow/load test (not just a pressure guage) you'll know if it's the pump (more than likely) or work your way downstream to relief valves ect.....

Hydraulic/trans oil or R&O AW32, not 80/90W (too thick for hyd system).....

on my mf65 if the draft positon handle is in the up position my hyd. wont work but putting both draft handles in the down position and putting the yoke down the hyd. system works don't know why but spent a week last summer scratching my head. good luck, Red
