I need advice getting rid of mice

That has also become a problem. We're breaking records with the number of snakes we've dealt with so far this year. The rat snakes are not so bad, but the copperheads and cotton mouths are showing up at the house too!!!!

The snakes are worse this year. I mowed last week and the next day there were 2 four foot skins that had been shed next to each other by the shop. Looks like cottonmouth skins which is our biggest problem. Last one I killed climbed 8' straight up the wall and was killing the baby barn swallows in a nest on the back porch.

We where supposed to get four kittens on Thursday, but they sort of wondered off and now we're hoping the owners can find them. I did have some fun watching the chickens chase down a few mice that I disturbed while mowing. Chickens are very aggressive when they see a mouse, sadly they are worthless at night time when the mice are most active.

We haven't ruled out Rat Terriers, but with four Akita's, it's a challenge introducing another dog to the family, and I honestly thing four dogs is plenty.

Same here, but I figured it was because of my mouse issue. I've killed 7 so far and my wife is at five. Of those killed, three where copper heads and two where cotton mouths. Our oldest Akita was bit again by either a copper head or cotton mouth. The first time we saw it happen and know for a fact it was a copper head. This time we just saw the swelling on her neck and found the bite on her jaw.

Some cats are mice killing machines, and some not so much. Depends on the cat.

The RT's will acclimate just fine. The Akita's, as you already know, can be very aggressive and vicious. Four is more of a handful than I would want to take on :) They don't call them "Wolf-Dogs" for nothing.

.

What would a chicken do if there were floodlights at night so it could see the mice? Or does that interrupt the laying cycle?

During the winter, when the temps are in the teens at night, we turn on heat lamps inside the coop, which has no affect on their sleep. Same thing with baby chicks. We pull the chicks from the next as soon as they hatch, dip their beaks in water and then keep them in a cage with a heat lamp in the corner keeping it 90 degrees. They live like this for about two months, or until their feathers come in. That light is on 24/7 and they all go to sleep at the same time.

Once asleep, they are worthless. Totally unable to protect themselves, or even react to a threat. That's when we catch them, move them around, and introduce new birds.

Eddie,

Sorry you are having this problem, but just to let you know one man's misfortune is another man's gain.
My wife had been lobbying for chickens and then I showed her this thread.

No more discussions of chickens.

I've never heard of them being called "wolf-dogs" Everyone I know calls them "bear dogs"

Sadly, they do have a reputation for being aggressive, but we raise them for the show ring and in order for them to be shown, they have to have a mild temperament and be willing to be handled by strangers. Checking their teeth and genitals is all a part of being evaluated by a judge.

As the owner and past owner of some American Staffordshire Terriers, which everyone calls a Pit Bull, I'm aware of a breeds reputation vs the actual temperament of the dog in question due to the environment it's raised. That said, other than the vet visit, no one is checking their teeth or genitals very often:laughing:

Great looking dogs, although I'm thinking the poop scoop patrol could be very tiring.

One if the unique traits of an Akita is that they like to go potty as far away from their home as possible. Its about 250 feet to the far side of their yard, and thats where they all go to do tbeir business. Just like leaves, i never pick it up. Between out heat drying it up, and the thunderstorms, its rare to even see it.

Cats must vary in their interest in rodents. I didn't know we even had mice in the house until I moved a subwoofer one day and out poured about two cups of dry cat food. A nice little stash about 30 feet from the cat bowl.

A little off topic but most dogs can be trained to go where you want them to. When I was younger I left my German Shepherd with my mom for a while. He was pooping near the back door and she would shovel it up and put it near the back of her yard. After two or three times he just started going back there to do his business.

We had a beautiful big gray ratsnake crawl up on the porch last Saturday. Probably 4ft long or even more. We haven't seen any mice lately!

I don't have any dogs or cats but my neighbor's two Catahoulas, a brown retriever, and a white German shepherd practically live on my front porch. Those dogs eat field mice like chocolate. If they are around when I bush hog, they will chase the field mice, catch and swallow them whole.
