i have a echo weed trimmer and it was doing the same thing. I rebuilt the carb but it did not help. then i took off the muffler and found that there was carbon buildup on top of the piston. I used a piece of flat plastic to scrape the top of the piston and then cleaned out the carbon. started it up and it had full power. no problem any longer. I think my problem was that i was using 85 instead of 89. my mistake

I have a Stihl, but this saw is an Echo. Gas has probably been in it 3 months. Probably e blend. 50:1. But it was half full and I filled it with new(er) gas. The strange thing is that it idles perfectly, pretty much as long as you want it to. I probably need to find the fuel filter. Have no idea where it is.

Three months is too long to leave ethanol gas sitting in a saw. Heck, I wouldn't even use three month old ethanol gas stored in a tank!

I am guessing you'll need to rebuild the carb. But, first check everything over, including air filter, fuel filter, fuel line, muffler, and plug. Could be something simple.

If all else checks out, you could try adjusting the tune. What you describe could be caused by the H needle being out of adjustment.

My bet is also fuel line / filter. I can't get non ethanol gas around here ...but I've learned that if I buy the 90+ octane and I always put the blue marine Stabil in it....all my fuel problems have gone away. Yes that gas is more $$ but it's not like I'm burning 30 gallons of it in a day ... more like 4 weeks...less in winter. I also don't worry about the age of it when stored in my 5 gallon cans (7 of them)

I think the first thing to check on a badly running engine is the old gas, replace it before doing much of anything else. My Husky wont run on old gas at all. Old gas in my Husky saw will not run full throttle and is hard to start and doesn't idle well either. You can remove the fuel filter and blow it out with compressed air but I doubt that is the problem.

Second check the muffler for carbon,I had a weed eater that carboned up and would only run about half throttle. Also check that the fuel line is not crimped under the housing. I also had that happen to my Husky saw, I guess it got crimped when I cleaned the air cleaner.

If it idles the gas is fine, unless there's a slug of water in the tank. I'd dump it out into a clear bottle (give it a few minutes to settle) and look, because you need to cross that off your list; not chase gremlins.

I don't like concluding that gas is bad, cuz what do you do with it? I've hucked a jug into a burnpile but that might be a little too exciting for most folks. I've used it for weedkiller in the parking area too, ------but spreading it out to evaporate, not much sinking into the ground----.

It has to be pretty bad (or many years old, smell like varnish) before I will discard gas. I've never discarded "few months old" gas unless contaminated it burns fine. I bought a motorcycle last summer; the guy said it hadn't started in 8 years and it ran fine on 8 years old gas.

+1 on the tank filter, get it out and backflush it. I'd blow it out with cab cleaner first, then follow up with compressed air. Note that water can plug the filter too.

Idling is a good sign.

Open the high idle jet a touch and see if that helps. Be sure to remember the changes as latter you might have to go back to the original.

Using high octane gasoline may help?

If high octane gas solves problem that says you have carbon buildup on the piston top.

Lots of WAGs.:confused3:
Start at the gas tank. Drain it of the existing gas and remove the fuel filter from the fuel line. Either replace the filter with a new one or blow it out by pushing air through the fuel out nipple on the existing filter.
Check fuel line for cracks, rigidity or excess softness/spongy feel. If any are present replace it with OEM line that fits the saw.
Fill tank with fresh Non E gas/oil mix at 50:1. and start and run as normal. If the problem continues follow it upstream from the tank until found.

as previous posters say, sounds like fuel problem. I never have had luck replacing the fuel line, myself. Replacing the fuel line is some thing I have a shop or dealer do. But replacing a fuel filter is easy if you have THE RIGHT STUFF. Two things that I use in replacing or inspecting the fuel filter. A hemostat that is a surgical instrument. The other is a piece of wire with a small bend in the far end. It will be like an open hook. You stick that in there and find the hose. Hook it. Then gently pull it out the filler hole. The hook will slide to the point where the filter and hose meet.

When you have it at the filler hole, you can pull it out with your fingers. Now, put the hemostat on the rubber hose to keep it so that it doesn't slide back in the tank when you remove the filter. RnR the filter, put it back on the hose, remove the hemostat and voila. If your hose is crappy the hemostat might wreck it. But if you hose is good, no problemo. That is how I have done it for decades on pro Stihls and Huskys.

Funky gas kills chainsaws. I run super and or super Leaded in my all my small engines.period.

Leaded? No such thing, anymore.
