Bet that scared the snot out of you. Glad you're okay.

There is a creek that passes through my front yard. Maybe 30 yards long. When I mow it, which is every time I mow the yard, my tip meter is pegged the whole time. Pretty scary stuff. I suppose having loaded tires on my BX2230 and a short, fat man in the seat might help keep it stable.

One thing I can never remember. If she starts to tip, do you turn up the slope or down the slope? Hopefully, I will never HAVE to know that.

I agree let it settle, check all fluids, turn engine over by hand if possible.

I agree this is the easy way to avoid hydraulic lock damage due to
engine oil in the cylinders. Removing the injectors or glow plugs
is hard to do on some tractors. Wrenching on the crank bolt should
be easier. Of course if the tractor is on it side for less than over
night, then I would not worry about hydraulic lock unless it burns
a lot of oil.

Turn in the direction of the tip. There is an unavoidable problem with this if youre going diagonally upslope and start to tip. Turning in the direction of tip takes you more across the slope. The actual turning throws weight back on the upslope tires while the orientaion to the slope gets temporarily worse. Turn very quickly is the only thing I can think of. If you can detect the tendency before the actual tip it's better togently angle toward a straight up ascent.

Glad you made it through safely and hope your machine is good.
Turn in the direction of the tip.
I would think that is the right thing to do when traversing a slope. And if you have the presence of mine, punch it too. Of course that might get you into a lake or gully, but you might end up there anyway, only upside down? I've only had to do that one time. Boy, it definitely exceeds my "pucker factor"....never flipped it over yet. Not sure what to do if you're taversing on a diagonal though? I'd think dropping the bucket to the ground quickly to regain balance...almost same pucker factor though.

I have a question...

Would using the decompression feature, cranking by hand help in this case? Could that be an alternative to removing injectors, etc?

So if I was tipping toward the creek, which is what would happen, I would turn, in essence, into the creek? Not arguing but that seems counterintuitive. IOW, are you saying, if the tractor is tipping TO the left, I steer to the left?

Exactly!

You're much better off giving the tractor a bath in the upright position.

I've done exactly this. I parked my 8N in 5 feet of water to avoid a rollover and had to rebuild the engine. I feel this was better than the alternative.

If you are going to "dunk" a tractor, turn off the engine. Water will hydro-lock the engine and do bad expensive things. Usually there will be a bit of time until the air intake is under water, then -- BANG! she will stop. Use that time to kill the engine and all you have to do is drain fluids, refill and good to go.

Yup...

Unfortunately for me, the creek bank dropped off at about a 45 degree angle. When I realized I was going in, I was already in. All new pistons, con-rods, grankshaft & gaskets...good as new. (Kept me from boredom for an entire February...)

Glad to hear you're ok. I've been over 3 times in my 40 plus years tractoring. The studies that always get me are the ones from the people who keep records regarding farm accidents that say that 70% of all tractor rollovers are fatal.

Andy

I'd guess that should be ammended to state that 70% of reported rollovers are fatal. I suppose when farmer Bob rolls his tractor on it's side, goes and gets the truck and tips it back over, then finishes plowing the field, that he doesn't bother to call anyone to tell them about it.

If a rollover was serious enough to have to call 911; multiple rolls, down an embankment, into a river, driver trapped, etc, that 70% sounds a bit more realistic.

Sounds about right to me. Both times I operated tractors in the inverted position, I got them upright & running again then carried on. Never reported either incident to anybody.

For that matter, as a teen, I worked for a funny old farmer who never figured out why his tractors couldn't levitate over the ditch in front of the farm. I recall pulling him out on at least 6 occasions. Again, no reports made.

According to those statistics, somebody died 5.6 times...
