You are on the right track. Brian had the correct answer. If you measure and lay out the posts on the ground and have everything ready you could easily drill all 120 holes in a day with a skid steer mounted auger with the correctly sized bit. I like to drill a hole 4" in diameter then the post you are using. Gives room to plumb. Some like larger to get a tamping bar in (rather than a shovel handle) and that takes a hole 6" wider than the post. Just mark the bit for the whole depth and go for it. They are very easy to operate once you learn the controls. on the hills, drill from uphill - let the auger float to get plumb.

My tamping tool was a long replacement shovel handle I got at the hardware store. I got and extra long one and used the rounded end. look for one with tight grain made of hickory or oak - not ash.

Hope this helps.

PS: also talk with your neighbors as some may have the set up, or know of someone. Also check with the contractor you mentioned, or others and get a hole only price. may be cheaper than renting. They should be able to get 15 to 20 holes an hour if they are good.

Another possibility is a Toro Dingo loader with the hydraulic auger. This is a small walk behind loader that you could transport behind a small truck. Should be able to rent the loader and auger set up for $250 to $350/day. Since you walk behind these models you can easily check the hole alignment without climbing on and off. Here is a link to the Dingo and you can use the locator to find one to rent.

If you have a large enough truck and trailer the skid steer with hydraulic auger is a good choice but will cost a little more to rent. The skid steer may be the easiest to find at the rental yards.

Have all the post holes marked with spray paint and you can dig a lot of holes in a days rental. Then take your time to set and pack the posts at your leisure.

The Dingos are great if you have good soil. From my experience, if you have many rocks, the bit will just sit there and spin since the dingo's don't have enough weight to break through or push the rocks aside.
