Dang mouse keeps getting on top of the backhoe engine and chewing a hole in one of the fuel return lines. He has done it twice on the same hose in the same spot even though I parked it in a different place after the first time. I moved it to the other side of the house for now. I guess I'm going to have to put some mothballs in there but I hate the smell as bad as the mice do.

Doesn't sound like an ideal solution but thanks for the suggestion. I need to get rid of or stop the mice from getting in the tractor or they will have wires and everything chewed up.

After a problem with mice eating my car the mechanic said he found a spray oil to hose everything down. But I just built a garage to fix it.

Put a trap baited with cheese where the mouse is causing a problem. I wire the traps to something so they can't run away with them. Mouse poison would work too.

I don't know if mothballs with repel a mouse but I know they don't repel squirrels. Been there tried that.

Mothballs didn't work for me.
I dumped a couple boxes all around inside my small shed to repel mice, they walked right by them and built a nest in my mower.

Seriously though, moth balls do not work. Traps or poison. If they have a nest in the tractor moving won't help...

I bought Ropel spray for my wife's hood insulation after mice or squirrels chewed on it. It's a taste type repellent, not too hard to find. Seemed to work.

If possible, leave the hood up to expose as much as possible (as suggested in another post). They like enclosed spaces. I've had the same problems with my equipment in my pole barn. Started opening the hood and such when not in use and have not found any nests since. I also put poison stations out to cut the population down a bit. Seems to work for me.

You all need a cat or two. Just don't feed them much, they will get their own food. Mice, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and shrews.

I'v used aluminum gutter guard which is easy to mold around any wire or hose and easy to cut with scissors.

I will second the cats. We used to have mice in the house every spring and fall and the birds never even got a chance at the feeders for all the squirrels that were always at them.
A few years back we got two orange cats and very soon no more mice and no squirrels within 100 yards of the house anymore. Much more effective than moth balls.

Yes sir they hate peppermint. I also like the glue traps. Had problems with them getting on the top of the truck motor and pulling the insulation off the bottom of the hood to build their nest. Put a couple glue or sticky traps on the top and smeared a little peanut butter just in the middle of the trap and they get one foot on that sticky stuff it all over with I can't use poison because I have chickens and don't want them getting back in the chicken coop and run and die there. Every year I clean the barn up from the old hay and straw and turn the chickens loose while I do it. It's a blast watching them catch the mice while i scrap up the straw and hay from under the pellets I stack it on.

The best thing I have found is the sticky traps. Put one or two in the engine compartment and within a few days, you'll get them nasty little wire eaters.

I have never had a problem with mice. We do have several feral cats around our place. Enough said.

Others say mothballs don't work but after rodents shredded wiring on my mini-excavator I packed the problem areas with mothballs. Four years later no problem but I do have to put up with the toxic odor.
