I bought this motor
Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices
It has a 9/ 16 inch shaft.
Around here all the pulleys I have found have a 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch shaft size spec.
I had to put a 1/2 shaft size pulley on it, so I set it on the vice, and ran it,I used a very rough rasp file to it as the shaft turned, and shaved off some of the shaft.
This took awile, and I finally got t small enough, so I could get the pulley on it.
Anyway, I have also done searching and dont seem to find any other motors with a 9/16 inch shaft. I wonder if its an error in the standard and thats why Harbor Freight ended up with them?
Has anyone had a similiar experience?
Thanks,
Allan

Mornin Bedlam,
Gee, I wish you had posted before you went through all that filing :) I would have gladly made you an adapter for your 9/16" motor shaft to mate to one of your pulleys ! Or would have bored one of your pulleys ! All I would want was the postage. Anyway good luck ! :)

thanks Scott for the offer. Have you ever heard of that size as being the norm?
The filing was a PITA but we do what we have to, expecially when Im cheap..
LOL The old motor I was thinking would maybe be good to through in the cement , if I ever make another weight box.
Thanks Allan

Afternoon Allan,
Actually for that size motor, 9/16" sounds about right :) If they had used 1/2" thats kind of flimsy and 5/8" might be OK but 3/4" would be overkill ! :) IMHO :)

Anyway glad you got it to work !

So, it was the lack of the 9/16 inch pulley in my area that was the real problem. not that the shaft was an odd ball?
I tried four different hardware stores and the HD .

Well, According to HF, it's a 48 Frame motor. And the NEMA chart shows that it should have a 1/2" shaft...

Typical of HF stuff!:D

That explains why you could not find a pulley to fit:eek:

I find that hardware stores and Home Depot / Lowe's are not the place that you will find things like this. You need to go to an industrial supplier or a Grainger Industrial Supply type of store. These are the people that deal with these types of issues all the time and have the proper part in stock, or can get it to you overnight. They usually sell business to business, but they are very accommodating to your needs if you are patient and let them take care of the commercial accounts first, if you are in there store. They also have lots of neat items on display for you to pick up and try while you are waiting. Dusty

Thank you kennyd. I thought by posting this that mst would agree it is an "off" size shaft. I had no idea what the 48 frame motor ment, and the chart. So I have learned something. And that is the beauty of this site and the people.
Thank you all for the replies.. I am now running that motor on my wood furnace, and I am considering buying another to have on hand, and with this new knowledge, and of cource the experience , be more prepared .
Thanks.
Allan
