I got lucky last night

Black Bear are not a joke. We had trouble with a bad one last year. Killed two or our amimals and kept coming back for more. We had to give him more, now he's a good bear. I used to like them, now I know what they can do. This one may have been relocated because he was a problem somewhere else. There are many many more round here than years ago, they break into houses even when people are inside.
Eddie Walker posted on this thread that more people are killed by black bear than any other wild animal in the U.S. Like to here more about that.

What kind of animal of yours did they kill?

The bears around here hibernate until early-to-mid-spring - I guess sometime in March or so, until there is enough food around for them to bother waking up. You're right, it was a bit un-nerving to see 3 of 'em the next day!
Wow going out into the dark of nite with only a ball bat to combat bears and coyotes .:)
Have to be braver or dumber then me. ;)

Haven't you ever heard of a double barrelled ball bat? :D

I am confused---
My research on the net and personal first hand knowledge shows the black bears are more docile.. easily scared..
the horn on my truck scared one off...
Read this:

What if I see a black bear?

How dangerous are black bears?
now brown grizzly bears... they are a different story...

here is another research..
HowStuffWorks "Which animals kill the most people in the wild?"

Howstuffworks

Eddie--- hey man-- no disrespect meant-- but bears have only recorded to kill less than 30 people in the last 10 years. not sure about others...

anyway---just a little bit of info...

RadarTech, you are right, MOST of the time black bears scare off fairly easily. I have had to shoot a fire arm (carefully) twice to scare two bears off in the past few years. They just would not leave our property. The wife does not want to go out to the barn and find a bear hanging out around there. They can be dangerous and do kill and injure people. We just don't want to be one of them. Our feeling is they were here first so as long as they do not bother us we leave them alone but we also do not want to take unnecessary chances in getting mauled by one.

British Columbia has the largest Black Bear population in North America, and Vancouver Island has the densest population of bears in the entire province. OPPS, that's where I live.:eek:

Well, maybe a bit of both, LB! :)

Radar Tech, you are "generally" correct, and in fact my experience proved that right, just making a noise did scare them off. But there are also many examples of a Mother bear with her cubs being one of the most dangerous combinations. And I was within 15 feet of just such a combination.

Last summer a neighbour was riding along a hydro cut through the woods on an ATV, and in the distance, maybe 100 yards away, he saw a black bear cub. He shut off his ATV to just sit and watch, when the mother bear showed up BEHIND the cub, meaning the cub was between her and my neighbour. Even though she was 100 yds away, she took this as a threat and came charging full speed toward him, and black bears can run FAST! He just had time to get his ATV started up and get turned around to race away, or she would surely have made mincemeat of him.
