What gets me is the amount of GOOD food thrown away every day by I guess all supermarkets! If you don't believe me, just go around back sometime and look in their dumpster! :(

When we lived in GA, my mother volunteered for a local food ministry, we would go to the local Publix/Kroger and get their close to date/barely good produce and bread. Publix generally had 3-5 55 gallon rolling trash cans of produce that we went through each time and salvaged 5-10 banana boxes of produce out of (2-3 times per week). Kroger had 2-5 banana boxes of bread that we picked up (one or twice a week).
It was amazing how much went to waste there.

Once Publix had 2 or 3 partial pallet-boxes (pallet with cardboard all around it) of watermelons that we picked up.
There were enough watermelons to fill the floor of one 15 passenger van with the seats out and another with only one bench installed.

IIRC the manager at Publix changed and the new one sent everything to the dumpster... What a waste.

The other day the wife and i went to Pizza hut for the dinner buffet. Usually got about 2 times a year there. We went in and there was a family in there 3 little kids and 2 parents about 25 or 26. There was a few others in there to. Every time we gotup te get another peice the table was empty. We looked ver and the 3 kids were taking piles of pizza to the table and nibbling on the ends. The Thing that made me steam was the fact they left whole slices untouched. I got up and was about to get a slice f a supreme and the mother got up there and just picked up the whole pizza and caried it over to the table. I went to school with a girl that works there and she counted the slices they wasted 36 slices eaten and no telling howmany 1/4 eaten slices there were.

It amazes me when I see or hear of parents that impart such poor lessons to their offspring. I feel horribly guilty when I try something at a buffet and it tastes too bad to finish. It pains me to leave it on my plate when I have only taken a bite or two out of it. Even knowing it was awful doesn't help much. Your example of 36 slices with only a single bite taken boggles the imagination.

On the flip side of that, I recall going into a Pizza Hut back in the early 80's and seeing a man (by himself) driving the restaurant into finacial ruin. He had a pile of crusts on his table 2 feet high when I got there and 50 minutes later when I left, he was still eating. He did eat all the slice except for the crust, and there was no sauce or topping on what he did not eat.

Years ago I knew of several restaurants and stores that gave away unsold food to individuals in need as well as community groups that fed the poor. Apparently the city did not appreciate the homeless being fed and passed regulations that businesses could not give away unsold product and had to dispose of it in a manner that rendered it inedible. The business had to mix it with toxic material such as grease or other refuse product so that it could not be removed from their dumpster and consumed.

One bakery had been giving the day old cookies and doughnuts to a church school for years, but had to quit as a result of the new city regulations.

I am sure that examples like this are widespread. It is sad to think of how much waste is legally required and not simply a matter of disregard in our society.

Well you missed tonights dinner. And the corn bread is gone after two dinners. Boy that corn bread fills you up. :D Plenty of the pork is left as well as the pot of beans.

Come on down. I can feed a FEW TBNers but I think they might have big appetites. :D

Did I mention the wood that needs to be cut and split before dinner?:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

Dang, I missed it. I'd be up for splitting a little wood though, it's always fun to watch it pop open. good exercise too; I haven't even had the splitter on the tractor in a couple of years.

I have known of folks that park their late model cars around the corner from the food bank and change into work duds to collect their free meals.

AND some go to 2-3 food banks each week!

Ever offer a panhandler or street beggar a can of beans or tin of soup?
Better duck as he'll probably throw it back at you!
It's cash he wants!

A few years ago i drove past a guy holding a "will work for food" sign; still an unusual sight around here. I wa going to stop & give a couple bucks on my way back, but my girlfriend happened to call and tell me about him; she saw someone stop and give him a bag from McD's and he tossed it into the ditch.

On the other hand the local Cub Scouts had a food drive outside the gorcery store last Friday night and one of the fathers later told me they did better than hoped. He also stated that most of the people who donated probably should have used the food themselves.

In the summer for our anniversary we go to St Augustine Florida. Im amazed at the Panhandlers down there. My wife was niave to the fact that most want cash and make a good living. Year before last we went there and got there bad late on fathers day weekend. We went to the Taco bell to grab a quick meal. We in and and as I saw a man that was wearing and old Army coat, with ratty hair and a pair of crutches. He looked about 35 or so. He was talking to a man and woman in an SUV telling them he was a Vietnam Vet and had been shot down in an A10 Warthog. They gave him a few bucks.

We went in and I heard the manager talking about him harassing folks that dont pay. My wife told me he looked pathetic we should give a Vetran some money. i told my wife he was way too young to have been in Vietnam, that the airplane he said he was shot down in an A10 Warthog didnt serve till the 90s. And I gaurantee he wasnt crippled. We were getting into the truck and I usually have the keyes ready but this time I had pulled out the wrong set of Ford keys. While i was diggin in my pocket he came over on crutches and Gave me the A10 warthog story crippled leg and such. I told him I couldnt help him and he got irate and spouting off about barely being able to walk. He put his hands o nthe window of the truck and I pulled out my old rusty .32 pistol .

Apparently it cured him as he dropped both crutches and ran off like a shot across the next three lots. My wife was amazed, Then last year at one stoplight off I95 on SR16 there was a couple with signs working a sad story. Car broke down no money will work for food. I had friend working down there remodelling some rentals and he was hiring Day laborers for 16 dollars and hour. I had a map of his sites and was riding back from the motel. We pulled up and the light caught us. I could see the couple comming over and I got the red marker I had in the ash tray. I circled the locations of his sites and told Amy what was about to take place. When he got there I rolled the window down and handed him that map. It was funny to see his eyes light up as he was handed that big folded paper then to see him throw it down cussing me.

He said we do this for cash ****** I was laughing so hard I almost missed the light.

Times are tough... fuel prices are killer! Those fraudulent panhandlers ruin it for the legit ones. I hate to see waste and I hate cheapskates and abusers. Those things drive up the prices for everyone.

I like rice, beans and cornbread too! I like to raise my own vegies if I can get them to grow. I do a lot of grocery shopping in the woods with my trusty rifles and my seafood market is at the end of a pole in the water a lot. I do eat out, I'm not a health nut and could be in much better shape. Especially if I ate like the poor. They eat for nurishment, not entertainment. Many of us eat for the entertainment. But there is no excuse for abuse of a buffett, or for taking the sugar, sweetners, creamers, butter patties etc.

If more folks owned their own business and had to deal with "people like themselves" they would have more understanding and hopefully less abusive.

Awww...

Somehow I am thinking you do no want to work for food.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

But I am sure it is the ice on the roads that are keeping you here... Yeah, Yeah, that is it.:laughing::laughing:

By the weekend the ice should be gone. We will still have half of the pork loin left and at least half of the beans. I can make up a quick corn bread. :licking: Heck, if I have time I might make Cuban bread. :licking::licking:

All you have to do is show up with the chain saw and put in a few hours of work....

:D:D:D:D

We have been iced in for three days now. Monday evening I went for a walk and checked on some trees that have been down for awhile to see if they could be turned into firewood. One of these trees came down in Fran which was back in the 90s. It is a Red Oak and still good for firewood.

Yesterday afternoon I went for a walk and our driveway and gravel road is solid ice. Never seen that before. I could skate on this stuff. The paved road was in pretty good shape but it was wet and there were patches of black ice that I could not see when walking until I stepped on it. We had a bit of melting yesterday, the temps got to 33ish. But this morning the temp was 25ish. Tis ugly out there. But nice and commfy in the house with the wood stove.

Later,
Dan

There are some good for nothing folks out there, for sure. They are at both ends of the economic spectrum, being those who walk on the backs of the common people. Some expect everything to be given for no effort on their part while others have no problem in taking whatever they want without producing anything tangible, e.g. Wall Street.

There are, however, hungry and needy children in this country. Just before Christmas this year, our local law enforcement conducted their annual Cops for Kids program. They took needy children to Wal Mart and gave them each $200 to spend as they chose.

One little guy (around 7 years old) spent his entire $200 on instant oatmeal. A little girl bought coats for herself and two siblings. Another boy bought a small propane heater and coats with his money. Another child bought food items and coats while an 8 year old boy bought gifts for his mother and sisters and spent nothing on himself.

The WM checker who related this story said she could hardly fight back the tears as she checked them out.

These are not generalizations, but specific examples of what is going on.

How to fix it, I'm not sure. Maybe the parents are out of work, maybe they are sick, maybe they are neglectful, they could be on drugs. Whatever it is, we are going to have another generation of impoverished people if some intervention is not made.

Years ago I did a job building several traffic signals in Seattle. Over the nine months we spent on the job we had a fairly attactive young lady who panhandled there nearly every day. We often had time to talk or visit as the job went on. One of the things I was told by her was that she was there by choice and that she usually cleared $100-300 per day. She had no desire to find any kind of a regular job as it would cut into her lifestyle with the reduced income and as it was she could choose when she wanted to work and when she didn't. To her, this was her job and she considered it a totally acceptable way to make a living. I never could understand that mentality.:confused2:
