A very personal story about the joint UAW Toyota NUMMI Plant in Fremont CA...
Mom always drove what ever inexpensive car Dad could find for her. One of Dad's last wishes from his hospital bed was for Mom to have a new car... one that she would not have to worry about after he was gone. Dad told me to see to it that Mom gets a nice Toyota.
After Dad passed, I wrote a letter to the President of Toyota expressing my Father's wishes and to let him know that Mom, at age 70, would soon be getting her first brand new car, a Toyota Corolla built in Fremont Ca.
To make a long story short, Mom and I were invited by the President of Toyota to "Spend the Day" watching HER car being built. It seemed that nearly all of the 5,000 UAW workers knew Mom was coming and they really made us feel very special. In 6 hours we watched her car go from a painted shell to driving off the line. Many of the workers signed the undercarriage and we have a picture of Mom beaming as she sat in her car as it was going down the line.
My family will never forget the generosity of the Toyota people in Fremont California for their kindness after Mom's loss. One of the line supervisors said it best when he said, "We look at it as neighbors helping neighbors"
BTW Her "Signature" series Corolla has been flawless in the 5 plus years since we saw if being born.
