I can\'t understand some people

the people beside me have girls that are into FFA...(I think it is more mom and dad you know how that is)
On about 2 acares that have a donkey a goat and 3 cows so you can just guess how the grass does. I was out cutting my corn stalks down and asked if they wanted it from the cows. I was shocked when they said "NO"
Oh well I go in and cut the corn off the cob and get it in freezer bags and think. I be the people across the road would want these for the 3 horses that are on 1/2 acres (no grass just sand) and they sand "no"
Do these people not know that the feed that they by is made from?

is the wet hay that is in the field (for weeks) better for the cows than freash cut corn?

Wow . . . in our county the conditions would fall under animal abuse. For a non-commercial operation, to have 1 horse you need 5 acres, each additional horse requires an additional 1.5 acres. So 2 horses = 6.5 acres of total ground, 3 horses = 8 acres, 4 horses = 9.5 acres, etc.

I can't imagine 3 horses on 1/2 acre . . . or 3 cows + 1 donkey on 2 acres. I guess I also can't figure out why they wouldn't want free corn for their animals unless they are opposed to giving them good food?

We don't have any restrictions here, but I have a 3 acre pasture with 2 horses. They can't keep up with it, I just finished hogging it last night with waist high grass.

They ***JUST*** about caught up with it over the winter but now that spring/summer is here, they don't have a hope.

Grass does not gown as well down here in the sand. I would love some of the NC red clay in my yard

That southern red clay looks pretty but keep the ants down there with it please.

It's also a rule here that you need land for farm animals like a cow or horse.

Is the rule arbitrary or make sense for your area?

I guess I'm asking about what Bob Skurka stated. Land in my area is commonly agreed upon to support approximately 1 cow or horse per acre. Based on what I see with my own property, I can agree. They aren't hurting for forage with approximately 1 1/2 acre per horse.

Bob... do you know the reasoning behind the high land requirements per animal where you are? Are the reasons valid or just because some PETA advocate went crying to the right person?

Your neighbors sound a little thick in the head. I'm not though: at one time I had 8 antique tractors on 1.5 acres. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Robert, I honestly don't know WHY, although in my area there doesn't seem to be a lot of sympathy for the PETA type of crowd. I suspect it is more related to population density and complaints from homeowners. The county I live in is one of the more populated counties in the state, the southern half is very rural but the northern half houses roughly 700,000(?) people, I think the city folks (and I admit to being one of those) who moved to the southern part probably had a lot to do with the 5 acre rule. What is odd is that my daughter rides horses at a commercial stable, it is probably on 10 acres, they house roughly 20 horses there and that is fine. The 5 acre rule just applies to homeowners.

So then a home owner can have 5 acres per horse but a non home owner can have 5 horses per acre.
