Managed to hit stump with front left tie rod and bend it. (Kubota 3400 HST 4wd). I think I can bend it back without removing it. Any opinions/advice?

I would remove it and put it in a press and make sure you count the threads before taking it off so it will be aligned when you reinstall it. Not easy but it will remind you for next time.

I'd be afraid of hurting something else if I tried to bend it back while still on.... I'd take it off and take it to a machine shop -- in Rosenberg?

Just hit another stump in the same place while backing up.:D

Seriously, I agree with the others. Take it off to work on it.

Mine is tubular and bent back in a vise fairly easy. Good opportunity to set the toe in on your front end also.

I hooked a chain to my FIL and pulled mine somewhat straight, then removed it back at home to fix it properly.

Buy a new tractor LOL. Seriously, I would do as others suggest. Take it off, and straighten it as best you can. And, as Mr. Jimi suggests, count the threads so you can at least get in the ball park toe setting. Then, if needed, set the toe to to manufacturers spec. Be careful afterward, as most metals tend to bend a little more easily having once been bent.

I know 23 is the tie rod ,If he tries to straighten it on the tractor and breaks 21 is what i was trying to say. the tie rod want break I don't think. But I did break 21 one time bending on the tie rod.that was on a D19 a long time back and it was 97$ back then . It may be more now.If you break one thing trying to fix something else you are backing up.And I have done that a lot.

Spray a little yellow paint on the threads before you take it apart and you'll get it right back in the same sweet spot.

Gizmo, it sounds like we have both tried it the other way and had sad results. I wish him best of luck with this

Exactly what I was going to say. It's something that I routinely do to all my tractors since I bend tie rods on most of them. Works great and you'll never know it's there.

the only problem with this is it can put stresses on other stuff....that won't bend and could cost more.

Rob This would be true if the bending were occuring by excessive forces coming from trying to turn the wheels and them not turning. Since the bending is coming from the center of the actual tie rod hitting something, negible additional forces will be delivered to the remaining components. I routinely reinforce my tierods and have been doing it for over 20 years with absolutely no problems.

The tie rod on my Kioti is solid round stock drilled out on the ends for the tie rod ends. If you want to bend it back while still on the tractor then I would recommend heating it without burning the tractor. That should make it easier to bend and less likely to bend again. It would stink to use too much force and break off the hub ears where the tie rod ends attach.

I just replaced my bent rod since they only cost like 40$.
