Hypothetical Doomsday Scenario

/ Hypothetical Doomsday Scenario #301
Hate to resurrect a dead thread, but I came across it in a totally unrelated search, and I was compelled to read it... My biggest thoughts on this matter were brought about by recent real world events, coupled with the TV show Revolution:

What stops us from getting Fukushima'd 500 times over if the power were to instantly go out? Granted, I'm sure there are multiple redundant generator, battery, and cooling pump backups in place, but If you take the Revolution TV approach, where all electricity - including batteries - fails to work, are we all screwed? Are any of you out there Homer Simpson types that know if reactors can be brought down without any electricity at all?

Aside from the end of the world worries, I'm sure there are many who think a "reboot" would be great, but unless you were so far off-grid that you couldn't be found for your entire life, you'd probably meet your before you wanted, because there's always someone out there that would want what you have and would be capable of taking it. Without civilization, not everyone will remain civilized.

I've read the rest of these posts and there is one fatal flaw. It take electricity to restart the units. The utilities have identified specific units for what we call "black start" capabilities. These usually have some type of a generator to provide power to systems allowing us to start the units (got to warm them, start fans for draft, etc.).

The other problem with the show I have observed - Mechanical Energy still works - thus, there is no reason we wouldn't be putting steam drive apparatus into service (heck they run tourist trains all over now). Sure, it might kick us back a few years - but we would be moving via train (not sure I trust a plane on steam power) waterwheels would be back in use - and other mechanical thermal systems would be in use. On the show - there is nothing that I've seen yet showing that.

I think the election results proves we can survive a doomsday scenario. Well, some of us, anyway.... :) :)

yep.. even aftr a worldwide technology shutdown.. we should be able to at least drop back to late 1800's electrical production BY HAND ( windings..e tc.. ) if needed.

We will always have solar and wind and as long as a person can store it in battery's for nite time use we personally wouldn't have to do w/o electricity. Now on a grand scale it may not work for the masses but individually I believe we can get by.

True.
The "Beginning" of the "End" has already begun. Just a matter of time and the implementation of restrictive and Socialistic Laws will hasten this great Country's demise. If one has done any measurable amount of research regarding this matter, the TIME will most definitely be "Sooner" than "Later". Just imagine the ExecutiveOrder declaring "Martial Law" during Peacetime. It is not my intent to be opinionated, just stating obvious facts. The current situations in the World and the belief that our present Leadership can correct the situation, somewhat, is a Pipe Dream. The belief that World Governments, especially America, has Leaders that are infallible is unnerving and resonates with the behavior of "Hiding one's head in the Sand". Thank you for listening.

Well put.

There are scenarios being discussed. The largest seems to be about fomenting civil unrest in the urban areas, which can then be used to further the governments interest as you've identified. Hopefully, depending on where you reside, there are enough like-minded individuals intent on resisting such tyranny. Around here, they are expanding militias.

I didn't state whether or not I would push the button, I asked if you would push it. From your response, I gather that you would not.

I think I would make sure I had all of my mechanically injected diesels running before the button was pushed and lots of diesel of course, would be a very popular guy :)

how did this thread move from solar flares to civil disobedience:confused: Like local militia would conquer the world's most effective military? Which clearly isn't going to attack localIy anywaaaayy. Gotta get me some of what you guys been smoking/chewing/mainlining/drinking. Must be better than Disney Land visits!

imho.. the solar flaries are just one ( on the low side ) of things that could happen that might lead to a EOC.. and in an EOC.. then you have chaos.. loss of govt control.. civil disobedience.. etc.

far stretch.. but within the realm of 'possible'.

There is a satellite network which is capable of permanently shutting down all electrical machinery and appliances of any kind. The satellite network is controlled by a computer, which is controlled by a small hand-held remote device.

Enter a code then push a button and that's it. No electrical power grid, no TV, no internet, no cell phones, no cars, no nothing. We would effectively and permanently be thrown back into the stone age within seconds.
Would you push the button?

I hate what ifs. There will always be someone or something (N.Korea, Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Sun Spots, Opec, ******, Gengis Khan, Heads of State with a grudge, Manifest Destiny, Dictators with a wrong idea but force keeps them in power, any other event that affects a region or people). What I see each day are people that don't agree with anyone or anything readying for whatever may come their way by buying up survival gear and weapons at inflated prices and lining the pockets of the suppliers. The biggest disaster I see on a regular basis is the American Political System and the influence of individuals spouting hate and discontent. Fortunately there are enough people with the correct view of what is necessary to carry on and prevail. What is unfortunate is that there will always be the Enrons, Banks too Big to Fail and individuals and politicians in Government that will try to change a persons right to make choices.
In my opinion the way to survive is live within your means, don't depend on the 401k or the Government to get you through a disaster. Your on your own for a few days anyway. Natural disasters are not widespread and severity is usually dependent on population density not how many states are affected.
