My JD 425 tractor/lawnmower has a hydrostatic transmission oil leak. It is not a big leak, but it is big enough to replace a quart every 2 or three months. I know the proper thing to do is to start dismantling and find the leak, and I will do so in the near future, but right now I just don't have the time.
The recommended fluid is JDM J20D/C. Since this oil is pretty expensive, I was wondering if there is a cheaper suitable replacement oil available until I get this problem fixed. The manual specifically states NOT to use engine oil or type "F" ATF.

I also have a 425 and use amsoil fluid, no issues; for the last 14 years.

Thanks for sharing the info. What type of Amsoil are you using? A quick search revealed several types.

amsoil 'anything' is likely even more expensive than the dealer oil.
