Found the below ad on Craigslist. The ad states it's made by Taylor. I searched the interweb and cannot find Taylor's website. The seller is asking $4000 for the unit. Can anyone tell me more about these units? It appears to be a 3pt hitch, running off a pto pump. I've got three farm ponds that I'd really like to safely mow around, this really looks like a slick rig for the job. My buddy also needs the same, so we could split the cost 50/50 to soften the blow.

I have available to sell brand new a Taylor Mower that fits rear of conmpact tractors (25-40hp). Designed to cut ponds, ditches, etc. It operates off pto with a hydraulic pump. Also has cylinder for tilting mower deck and weight box for counterbalance. The Mower can can be extended also.

No one has one of these units???? In that case, I don't want to be the first! :)

Careful online search in the past revealed other boom mowers for compact tractors. I would love to have a heavy duty brush ripper like the road crews use but even the small ones are pricey.

Taylor is probably Taylor Made. I believe they are now owned by Pittsburgh Industries.

Which CraigsList city? Anyone know?

Price is excellent. A similar unit from Alamo is over $10,000.

A mechanical version of this with it's own power source could be attached to a loader bucket, front blade, 3 point hitch or be towed behind any tractor or ATV.
Cost: Thousands less than $4000.
It would really be handy for mowing out over ditches and banks.
If I could weld I'd build a prototype.

I have a boom mower, but it isn't built like this one, and it wouldn't be much help to you, since putting it on a CUT would be a big mistake. Mine is on a 7710 and it knows it is back there. With over 1200 pounds on the nose for counter weight, mine will still lift the front end effortlessly but like I said, mine is different than this one. The 7710 has duals on it, and from what a previous driver told me, I do not want to operate it without them. I have heard of smaller units built like mine working fine on smaller tractors, in the 50 hp range, but have never actually seen one or been close enough to drive one.
Several people on this forum have done what Lbrown suggested he would do if he could weld. An extensive search for those types would be a good idea if you have welding and fabrication skills. Some of them are pretty neat and would make a good project for the two of you to tackle if you have the time, skills, equipment, and with the help of this forum, the information. Spending $4K on a unit that may or may not work on your tractor might be a problem, but if you can build your own, you can size it to the tractor itself.
I don't think you need to be concerned as much about the tractor having the horsepower to run the pump as you will about the tractor having enough stability to control the mower when it is being manuevered on a slope, on slick grass that will probably be wet and uneven. Add in your fine red clay and just how slick it is and you have a good idea of what I am getting at.
In other words, what you are proposing needs to be looked at very carefully, as there are many concerns that need to be looked at.

Hardee makes several sizes. The smallest one weighs 1675 pounds and has a 48" cutting head. Don't know what size tractor it is recommended for. The Hardees were common in SE NC, made in Loris, SC.
