Here is a drawing I made on how I plan to plumb the hydraulic lines to my home made grapple. (There are pictures of a wooden prototype that I made posted on the Build-It Yourself forum. The thread is titled, "Wooden BX23 Grapple.")
The two main components I plan to use are:
1) Double selector valve Surplus Center's Item# 9-5117-A
2) Cylinder--Surplus Center's Item# 9-7257-6
Does anyone have suggestions for a better way to do it?
One question I have is what kind of adapters do I buy to go from the existing lines to the double selector valve and from the double selector valve to the existing lines? My present thought process is to buy the valve and the grapple cylinder and then go to a hydraulic shop and get the adapters that I need.
Thank you,
A. Metcalf

I would use JIC fittings for the hoses, and use what ever adapter to connect the hoses to the diverter valve.

With no power to this valve, the curl is utilized, and when you flip the switch, you apply 12 volts to both solenoids, and the circuit switches to the grapple mode.

Depending on your GPM, you might want to use 1/4 in hose for reduced flow.

I believe your curl cyl should be connected to 1E, and 1R as in the diagram. That is the power off state.

When you flip the switch on, the fluid will now exit out ports 2E, and 2R.

J_J,
Thank you for your help. It is late now but when I have time to digest what you said I may have a couple more questions. Thank you for the suggestion about using the 1/4 inch hose. I didn't want the grapple to operate real fast but didn't know enough about restrictors to try that without some insight. I am glad the 1/4 inch hoses will do what I wanted to do.
I spent some time this afternoon writing down hoses and adapters that I will need to get from Surplus Center but now I see I need to do it over again using the JIC fittings. Thank you for that piece of advice.

Keep in mind, that the 1/4 hose is just one restriction, and the slow down of the grapple operation, is based on the GPM provided.

If at max engine rpm, and you are putting out more GPM than necessary, you can slow the engine, or add a needle valve and adjust it to provide you the timing/speed for the grapple at max engine rpm.
